JOB DESCRIPTION
General Overview: At an intermediate level, performs various surveying tasks, such as collecting data, recording survey field notes, operating survey equipment and performing survey-related calculations. This position utilizes knowledge and experience gained but is still building higher-level knowledge and skills. Receives a moderate level of guidance and direction from supervisor, manager and/or more experienced colleagues. O^C Performs electronic data collection and performs quality control and quality assurance procedures on data collected. Records survey field notes and sketches in the field book. O^C Performs construction staking, including grade staking, structure staking and large-scale infrastructure layout. O^C Performs routine maintenance on survey equipment. O^C Performs routine survey-related calculations using coordinate geometry software to solve for angles and distances for location of property corners and other related field points. O^C Assists with data collection, inspection and mapping of overhead and underground electric transmission and distribution facilities. Assists with visual inspection and/or location of existing overhead and underground electric distribution facilities and identifies physical deficiencies. O^C Communicates and coordinates with landowners and customers regarding survey field operations, as well as inspection of distribution and transmission lines. O^C Operates survey equipment such as Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, electronic total stations and hand-held computers. O^C Clears brush and trees with chain saws and machetes, uses sledgehammers, post-hole diggers and post drivers to set survey stakes and monuments. O^C Performs work by traveling independently or with a small crew to various locations (substations, power plants, water systems, etc.) as scheduled. Minimum Qualifications: One or more years of experience in survey field operations, including electronic data collection and use of total stations and GPS. A degree(s) in surveying or relevant field may be substituted per *** guidelines for certain years of experience. Driver s license Knowledge, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: O^C Knowledge of all applicable codes, regulations and laws pertinent to survey field equipment and operations O^C Knowledge of surveying principles and practices O^C Knowledge of electrical and mechanical equipment operation O^C Knowledge of engineering principles O^C Knowledge of construction principles and practices O^C Knowledge of the National Electrical Code or National Electrical Safety Code O^C Knowledge of electric transmission and distribution line construction and maintenance O^C Skill in the use of personal protective equipment O^C Skill in the use of handheld manual and power tools O^C Skill in performing coordinate geometry calculations O^C Skill in performing distribution and transmission line inspections O^C Intermediate skill in using surveying data collection equipment and software O^C Skill in operating survey equipment (e.g. RTK and RTN GPS equipment, electronic TheodoLite, and hand held Data Collectors) O^C Intermediate skill in reading and interpreting diagrams, prints, maps and land survey documents O^C Skill in communicating effectively with team members, supervision / management and external organizations under normal and emergency conditions O^C Skill in verbal and written communication O^C Basic skill level in office productivity applications (such as email, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.) O^C Skill in meeting deadlines O^C Basic skill in AutoCAD with ability to edit and plot drawings O^C Intermediate skill in writing and drawing field sketches O^C Ability to work in a team environment. Work Environment: O^C Works in an electrical substation and transmission line environment O^C Work hours are spent in a rugged outdoor environment including traversing rugged natural terrain involving significant distances O^C Work involves exposure to noise O^C Work involves exposure to various and sometimes extreme weather conditions O^C May involve traveling and lodging out of town O^C Work involves weekends, holidays and non-standard hours O^C Works in close proximity to energized low and high-voltage electrical equipment and/or lines O^C Work requires use of protective equipment O^C Work involves exposure to natural hazards such as fire ants, snakes, wasps and other stinging insects and other wildlife. Physical Demands: O^C Work involves frequent finger/hand manipulation in using a keyboard, mouse, hand tools and operating equipment O^C Work involves occasional climbing, crawling, crouching or other non-sitting positions in performing surveying duties O^C Work involves frequent standing and/or walking in performing surveying duties O^C Pushes or pulls up to 35 pounds less than 20% of the time O^C Work involves lifting up to 35 pounds from the floor to the waist less than 20% of the time.
