Job Description:
The Apprentice role allows candidates to complete a surgical technologist training program while learning on-the-job to develop industry-specific skills. As a member of the surgical team, the Surgical Technologist ensures the operative procedure goes smoothly, efficiently, and complies with all safety processes and policies. Apprentices enrolled in the program will be integrated into the OR team; upon successful completion of the training program the apprentice may be hired as a Surgical Technologist. This position will function under the supervision of an instructor, preceptor, and Registered Nurse and reports to Surgical Operations management. The work experience is related to the Apprentice’s specific role and will support Intermountain Health’s mission, vision, and values.

+ Intermountain Health has partnered with Salt Lake Community College's (SLCC) Surgical Technology program to create an apprenticeship program that tightens connections between training and the workplace.
+ Intermountain Health will sponsor up to 9 apprentices for the fall 2025 class.
+ The program will require full-time attendance as a student at SLCC’s Surgical Technology Program in West Jordan, Utah and requires routine check-ins with a supervisor from Intermountain Health.
+ During the school year, apprentices will work at our hospitals surgical services areas for short shifts (before classes) to observe and learn key on-the-job skills that support surgery.
What we offer:
+ Get paid to go to school (36 hours/wk. during school. 40 hours/wk. for required clinical externship hours).

+ Current CPR/BLS card from the American Heart Association

+ Caregivers accepted into this program are required to sign an agreement prior to beginning the program to work for Intermountain for at least one year (2080 hours) after they complete the program.
+ Students will pay for SLCC and the Surgical Tech. program enrollment fees, all prerequisite courses, school supplies, uniforms, & books.
+ Caregivers must be in good standing with Intermountain Health by meeting expectations in their current position. (Corrective actions received in the last year can impact standing).

+ Candidate must apply and meet all SLCC College requirements to be accepted into their Employer sponsored surgical technology program (Steps to Apply # 1- 4 below).
+ All prerequisites must be completed at the time of application.
+ SLCC application submission deadlines are as follows:
+ January 15 - May 15, 2025 (Priority review for applicants).
+ If position's haven't been filled by the priority review deadline, a secondary deadline will be opened from June 1 - August 1, 2025.
Job Essentials:
+ Attends intermountain health and apprenticeship program orientations and completes all required paperwork and documentation before a starting apprenticeship.
+ Completes all mandatory training as assigned.
+ Maintains good performance and attendance with Intermountain Health and SLCC.
+ Ensures the operating room and surgical items meet disinfection and sterilization criteria.
+ Maintains sterile field and safe environment.
+ Under the direction of a preceptor, the apprentice prepares the operating room and instruments for surgical procedures.
+ Assists the surgical team during the procedure within their scope of practice.
+ After the procedure, cleans room and prepares for the next procedure in compliance with the established protocol.
+ Demonstrates ability to consistently maintain a good rapport and positive demeanor with colleagues and customers.

Where are classes held?
+ Salt Lake Community College provides the curriculum and faculty. Classes will be held at the Salt Lake Community College Jordan Campus in West Jordan, Utah.
+ Caregivers will also participate in clinical rotations at various clinical assignments at various hospitals and facilities in Salt Lake City and surrounding areas.
What are the hours of the program? (Days and times are subject to change per SLCC)
+ Classes are Monday-Thursday in the afternoons ranging from 1:00 pm- 6:00 pm.
+ Labs 1st fall semester block are Tuesday and Wednesdays 9:00 am- 12:00 pm. Labs for the 2nd fall block semester labs go as late at 9:00 pm.
+ Tests occur on Friday morning.
+ “Work learning” hours will vary throughout the week determined by the student employee to obtain when they are not at school.
+ Outside of school, the student/employee will work in our local hospitals to gain work experience in surgical services areas and supplement their work hours (up to 36 hours) they don’t get at school (lecture, labs, tests).
+ The work will occur in central processing learning to process and sterilize instruments, assist operating rooms as needed, and observe surgeries.
+ Externship hours will be most likely be Monday through Friday day shifts up to 40 hours. Typical shifts could be from 6:30 am to 3:00 pm.
Are there grade requirements while in the program?
+ Students accepted into this program must receive a C+ or better in each class while in the program. Students who receive less than a C+ in a class may not move forward in the program.
What happens when the program is over?
+ After completion of the program, caregivers are required to work as a surgical technologist for Intermountain Health for 1 year (2080 hours).
How much will I get paid, and will there be growth opportunities?
+ Beginning pay $20.71/hr.
+ After completion of 1st fall semester block, pay will increase to $21.54/hr.
+ Once graduated, you will be promoted to the OR Technician I role and move to the new grad entry rate during that time.
+ Once you pass your certification test, you will get a 5% increase in pay.
+ Intermountain Health offers career progression with up to 4 levels of pay based upon experience and merit.
