Title: Surgical Tech III

Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute is one of the region’s largest orthopedic and sports medicine practices, providing comprehensive care for more than 250,000 patients each year. In August 2023, the institute opened Florida’s first dedicated orthopedic hospital, featuring 75 private inpatient rooms, 10 operating suites with four virtually connected suites that can be used to train surgeons around the world, and a state-of-the-art research and innovation center with a 10-station bio skills lab and 3D printer.

In March 2023, a new medical pavilion opened adjacent to the hospital and houses outpatient clinics, an imaging suite, physical therapy spaces and the largest orthopedic ambulatory surgery center in Florida. Expertise, technology and services come together under one roof and cover the whole spectrum of care — from prevention and diagnostics to therapeutic and surgical treatment options to physical therapy, rehabilitation and performance health. The institute also holds official medical roles with multiple professional, college and high school athletic teams as well as well-known sporting events and venues.

The surgical tech III demonstrates through clinical practice a clear understanding of sterile techniques and has a working knowledge of the specialized instrumentation and equipment required for a variety of specialty procedures. Demonstrates competency to operate all specialty instruments, supplies, and equipment to at least one tertiary specialty service.

• Responsible for the maintenance of an orderly surgical field and for consistently passing instruments and supplies quickly and efficiently to the surgeon.
• Able to anticipate and prioritize the needs of the various steps associated with the procedure.
• Takes part in sponge, needle and instruments counts as dictated by the procedure.
• Responsible for maintaining the surgical specimen in a manner which identifies and preservesthem for pathology evaluation.
• Assistsin ordering and stocking ofspecialty supplies under the direction of management staff and departmental guidelines
• In collaboration with a Registered Nurse, serves as a technical subject matter expert for at least one tertiary specialty.
• Providesscrub servicesfor major proceduresin at least 2 surgical specialties(independently with high physician satisfaction).
• Prepares and conductstechnical performance-oriented training related to specialty service.
• Serves as a preceptor to perioperative personnel rotating through the scrub roles associated with their primary specialty(s) and/or second circulates on major tertiary procedures.
• Collaborates with surgeons and proactively addresses case needs when performing duties in either the scrub or second circulator roles.
• In collaboration with the clinical leadership, assists in workflow process improvement activities, contributes to organizational
effectiveness, and demonstrates career growth and development.
• Transports and delivers items, equipment, and medications (excluding controlled substances and IV chemotherapy drugs) throughout the facility.
• May have limited accessto areasstoring medications.
• Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
• Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

Other Related Functions:
• When directed by clinicalspecialist, inventories and ordersspecialty instruments, supplies unique to specialty.
• Participatesin the clinical orientation of SPD staff, serving as a role model and technical resource.
• Dependable and reliable in performance of Surgical Tech I and II duties.
• Performs all tasks in a manner that is cost effective participates in departmental performance improvement activities, meets education and certification requirements, upholds Orlando Health philosophy and objectives, contributes to organizational effectiveness, and demonstrates career growth and development

Education/Training:
High school graduate or equivalent.
Successful completion of:
• Surgical Technology training program; or
• Orlando Health training program
Licensure/Certification:
Maintains current BLS/HealthCare Provider certification

Experience:
Four(4) yearsurgical tech experience. (CST and two (2) years ofsurgical tech experience may substitute for the required experience).
