Overview
The Lead Field Safety Specialist is responsible for training and coordinating the Field Safety Specialist team's activities and assignments and acts as a subject matter expert for team member questions regarding safety training interventions and documentation. The Lead is also the primary coordinator for Safety on new account startups. Above all, this job is to ensure our fleet continues to improve their skills to improve safety performance.
Responsibilities
- Learn hazmat for driver training and compliance for reasonable suspicion assessments.
- Identify training needed for safety department-taught classes, including Orientation, new coordinator training, logs, mentor classes, defensive driving, confined pace, pre/post trip, and road evaluations.
- Conduct safety inspections and audits of transportation equipment, facilities, and operations to ensure compliance with company policies, industry regulations, and safety standards.
- Analyze root cause of safety occurances, and recommend corrective actions to limit risk and improve overall driver safety
- Collaborate with transportation managers and supervisors to identify safety hazards, assess risks, and implement controls to mitigate potential dangers.
- Provide safety training and guidance to transportation personnel, including drivers on topics such as defensive driving, Covenant SAFE driving systems, materials handling, etc.
- Stay informed about changes in transportation safety regulations, industry best practices, and emerging technologies to continuously improve safety performance.
- Collaborates with internal stakholders to determine needs and areas of improvement and help driver Safety.
- Complete random driver checks to ensure drivers are following policies and regulations, placing equipment properly, driving safely, and completing pre/post trips.
- Implement customer startup evaluation assessments to help our drivers be the safest fleet on the roadway and operate in the safest environment possible.
Qualifications
Knowledge Skills, and Abilities• Excellent verbal and written communication skills• Ability to be flexible in problem solving• Ability to manage all reporting functions related to the job.• Ability to keep a professional demeanor throughout all driver assessments, Customer engagements and in person driver meetings.• Able to effectively communicate to all internal and external employees in the enterprise the importance of Safety.• Ability to travel to customer sites and assess the environment for potential accidents and find ways to prevent them from occurring. Education and Experience• Highschool degree or equivalent required.
• Higher education a plus.
• Valid Class A CDL required
• Minimum 1 year as a Field Safety Specialist in a transportation enterprise.
• TWiC, HazMat, and Doubles endorsements preferred.

Covenant’s compensation philosophy’s intent is to use a competitive total compensation strategy to determine the current market value of a position while also considering individual factors such as performance in current position, time in seat of current position, experience, level of responsibility/accountability, and longevity with the company. The system will be objective and non-discriminatory.Pay Range: $56,146.95-$88,833.12
Pay Grade: 9
