Job Description and Duties
he Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) program at Northern Arizona
University (NAU) is a federal TRiO college preparation program that
serves 9th-12th grade high school students who are from disadvantaged
backgrounds and/or will be first-generation college graduates with an
interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). The
mission of UBMS is to create and enhance the skills and motivations
necessary to graduate high school and continue on in the completion of a
baccalaureate degree.
During the academic year, the UBMS Student Development Coordinator,
Intermediate travels monthly to (5) northern Arizona high schools (Many
Farms, Tuba City, Holbrook, Monument Valley and Coconino) to meet with
(70) participating students to provide information and services that
support postsecondary enrollment and success. UBMS also conducts a
five-week residential Summer Academy on the NAU Flagstaff Mountain
campus during June and early July. The Student Development Coordinator,
Intermediate position assists in overseeing the residential component of
the Summer Academy.
The Student Development Coordinator, Intermediate reports to the
Assistant Director of UBMS, and must be a collaborative and
communicative team member that is responsible for the delivery of
program services to achieve grant objectives that meet the needs of UBMS
participants. This position requires initiative and ability to work
independently at times.

- Work hours may flex in a time period depending on project needs;
some evening and weekend hours required.
- This position is based in Flagstaff but includes monthly academic
year travel to five northern Arizona high schools (Many Farms, Tuba
City, Holbrook, Monument Valley and Coconino). Most travel is
independent but may involve all program staff at times. Part of this
monthly travel includes overnight travel.
- This position includes supervision of a summer residential program
for UBMS students for six weeks during June and early July which
limits available vacation dates.
- Overnight event travel and chaperoning will be required for various
UBMS trips with students.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in field appropriate to area of assignment AND
two years full time administrative/coordinative program experience;
OR,
- Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supervising and motivating undergraduate college students
in an academically-focused residential setting.
- Experience working as part of a team and collaborating with numerous
external partners.
- Experience working with 14-17 year old adolescents, preferably in a
multicultural setting.
- Experience advising high school students with college preparation,
financial aid, and career planning process.
- Experience with data management and recordkeeping.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge
- Knowledge of adolescent and student development theory.
- Knowledge of primary factors that impact postsecondary preparation
and enrollment, as well as common stra egies used to increase
student success.
- Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles.
- Knowledge of U.S. Department of Education TRIO program laws and
regulations.
Skills
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Skill motivating and organizing self and others in an academic
and/or residential setting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
Outlook, Teams).
- Proficiency with online meeting applications and/or software (Zoom,
MS Teams, Skype).
Abilities
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships, with
supervisor, colleagues, high school partners, and community
organizations.
- Promote a diverse, inclusive environment.
- Independently travel and possess a valid AZ drivers license upon
employment.
- Work independently and as part of a team.
- Work a varied work schedule with flexible hours to participate in
evening and weekend events as necessary.
