Position Summary: This position is responsible for steel fitting equipment, parts, interiors and exteriors of ships, and shipyard buildings at our vast, 63-acre facility.
Detailed Description:
* Follows directions under intermittent supervision.
* Verify conformance of work pieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes.
* Align and fit parts according to specifications.
* Move parts into position, manually or with hoists or cranes.
* Position, align, fit, and weld parts to form complete units, following blueprints.
* Study engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials required and task sequences.
* Set up and operate fabricating machines, such as brakes, rolls, shears, cutting torches, grinders, and drill presses, to bend, cut, form, punch, drill, or otherwise form and assemble metal components.
* Lay out and examine metal stock or work pieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met.
* Tack-weld fitted parts together.
* Remove high spots and cut bevels, using hand files, portable grinders, and cutting torches.
* Mark reference points onto floors or face blocks and transpose them to work pieces, using measuring devices, squares, chalk, and soapstone.
* Position or tighten braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, bolt straps, or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting.
* Erect ladders and scaffolding to fit together large assemblies.
* Design and construct templates and fixtures, using hand tools.
* Hammer, chip, and grind work pieces to cut, bend, and straighten metal.
* Straighten warped or bent parts, using sledges, hand torches, and presses.
* Ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm in one position.
* Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
* Ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.
* Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
* Ability to imagine how something will look after it is moved around or when its parts are moved or rearranged.
* Ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
* Ability to use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing.
* Diagnose and solve problems of all kinds.
* Troubleshoot problems with all equipment as it arises.
* Proper storage of equipment.
* May be assigned miscellaneous tasks outside craft as required.
* Attendance is an essential function of the job.

Physical Job Demands:
* At least two times a day carry a 50lb bucket of tools and supplies to and from job site, including but not limited to, walking up to 500', climbing ladders / stairs, and crawling through 34" inner bottoms and through an 18"x24" lightening hole.
* Approximately two times a day pull 50lbs tools and equipment 50' up the side of the boat by using the hand of hand technique.
* Frequently utilize Grinder / Torch / Welder, including in confined space, by lifting 14lbs from the floor, carrying 50', and pushing up to 20lbs of force overhead, while kneeling and lying in different positions including 34" inner bottoms.
* At least once a day position welding feeders at the job site by lifting 50lbs from the floor, carrying for up to 100', up a flight of stairs, through 18"x24" lightening hole and over 36" frames.
* Occasionally pull hoses to job site including climbing over framing with tooling to access job site by lifting 10lbs from the floor, stepping over 36" frames, walking 3', crawling through lightening holes, and walking 25' to site.
* Occasionally utilize Chain Jack, Porta Pull, and Porta Power to position components for welding by lifting 48lbs from floor, hooking on a 72" pad eye, and pushing / pulling up to 150lbs of force.
* Regularly utilize various sized hammers by lifting 5lbs from the floor, utilizing in an overhead position or squatting / kneeling with both hands at a 20lb grip.
* Occasionally lift from the floor and carry 65lb strong backs and 12x12 blocks 15' and place on the floor.
* Approximately once a day carry a lightening hole cut out by lifting 43lbs and carrying up to 20'.
* Approximately three times a day take steel plate from the deck to the repair site by lifting 60lbs of steel and carrying it 100' including up / down stairs, over 36" framing, and through 18"x27" lightening holes.
* Fairing the bilge for bolting clips by lifting 22lbs and reaching over a 48" ledge.
* Utilize small tools to manipulate small parts for installation and/or repair by gripping / pinching with 10lbs of force.

Minimum Qualifications:
* High School Diploma
* Knowledge of materials and methods involved in construction and repair
* Ability to read basic blueprint reading
* Knowledge of how to read a tape measure
* A self-starter who can work with minimal supervision on an 8 for 8 basis
* Ability to work in inclement weather
Desired Qualifications:
* 3 years of experience preferred
* Prior shipyard experience a plus
* Bilingual language skills (oral & written) a plus
* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
* Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in construction / repair
