SUMMARY
The primary purpose of the Stationary Engineer position is to provide skilled work in the
operation of the central chilled water and steam system power plant. Responsible for the
operation and maintenance of all equipment in boiler rooms and equipment repairs within
the complex.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs preventative maintenance, correctives and inspections on electric/steam boilers,
chillers, cooling towers and associated pumps. Start up, coordinate equipment run
scenarios, and monitor/troubleshoot chillers, towers and boilers via BAS system. Perform
chemistry analysis, make necessary adjustments, data gathering and condition
assessments on cooling tower, chilled water and boiler feed water. Perform testing,
chemical treatment and preventative maintenance/correctives for Public Drinking Water
System and associate assets. Cleans and maintains all equipment and work areas.
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Ensure Proper Operation of Equipment •Record and log numerous temperatures,
steam pressures and vacuum pressures every two hours within the campus
•Record & log temperatures every two hours on the A/C heating boiler.
•Drives to other Research & Education Facilities in the Houston area as assigned to
record and log various temperatures, steam pressures and vacuum pressures
•Performs preventive maintenance on plant equipment.
•Troubleshoot equipment failures and take necessary corrective actions.
•Monitor client nitrogen freezers, refrigerators, and freezers for any possible problems or
failures.
•Responds to campus client equipment critical alarms, facility alarms and fire alarms.
Maintain Correct Hardness and Chemical Treatment Levels •Performs various
chemical tests to prevent rust, scale, algae, oxygen pitting, and corrosion.
•Conduct hardness test on water softeners, chemically treated boilers, cooling towers and
closed loop systems.
Assist in keeping accurate information on the Water Usage Log and Maintain
Correct Water Temperature •Records & logs city water meters, make-up & blow
down water meters for cooling towers, city main feeds and well water feed.
•Manually adjust bypass valves, if necessary, during the fall & winter months to maintain
a 70-degree temperature for the chiller condenser on the cooling towers.
Maintain an Efficient Response to Work Orders •Paint and clean areas as assigned.
•Perform assigned projects and equipment repairs.
Other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or equivalent. Four years of experience working with boiler systems, chiller/cooling towers, and/or water treatment systems in a large central physical plant.
First, Second or Third Grade Stationary Engineer, TDL (driver's license) in good standing.
