Job Overview
As the Staff Accountant on the Capital Assets team, you are a critical piece for ensuring the financial integrity of the Fixed Asset System and the financial statements as they relate to capital assets and the related expense accounts. You would be completing accounting assignments that require a high level of accounting skill and professional judgment. These assignments include the correct and timely accounting for capital assets; ensuring that reconciling items and variances are identified, explained, and resolved timely; monitoring account coding related to Capital Assets; monitoring the Fixed Asset system; and working with other areas of the County to ensure the integrity of capital assets.
Under the general supervision of the Manager, Capital Assets and in accordance with Harris County policies and procedures, the Staff Accountant:
- Review and approve the daily requisitions per the procedures and update as necessary.
- Process disposals received from Purchasing after the Commissioner's Court approval and other departments when requested.
- Complete Commissioner's Court approved transfers from Purchasing or other departments as needed.
- Research accounting issues through professional literature.
- Effectively communicate and articulate Harris County policies, procedures and various accounting transactions to external auditors and internal departments.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or other related field with a minimum of 24 hours of accounting coursework
Experience
- Minimum of 6 months of relevant and progressive accounting experience
- Experience in governmental accounting is preferred.
- PeopleSoft experience is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
- Excellent verbal, listening and written communication skills.
- High level accuracy and attention to detail.
- Excellent organizational, problem solving, and analytical skills.
- Proficiency in the use of MS Office with an emphasis Microsoft Excel.
- Willingness to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Account Principles (GAAP).
Nature of Work
- Physical requirements for the position are the ability to sit for extended periods of time and the ability to push/pull, lift and carry up to 15 lbs.
- Hybrid-telework | Monday - Friday | 40 hrs. per week
- May be required to work more than forty hours during the workweek or on weekends when special projects or deadlines need to be met.
