Position Overview:
Performs diagnostic cardiac sonography procedures of high complexity to assess cardiac structures and hemodynamics in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice and with policies, values and mission of the organization. Responsible for all commonly performed echocardiography procedures in the department with a high level of competence.
In addition to those performed by Levels I & II, performs:
- adult congenital heart echocardiograms
- cardiac research projects
May also be responsible for performing specific procedures and/or orient other staff to the department.

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:
CARDIAC SONOGRAPHY SERVICES.
• Performs routine and complex cardiac sonographic examinations using established procedures, policies and practices to ensure optimal results.
• Operates a variety of complex stationary and mobile diagnostic equipment.
• Ensures that routine and priority tasks are completed within established departmental time frames.
• Prepares for and assists physicians in a variety of diagnostic cardiac sonography and/or guidance imaging during invasive procedures.
• Explains and educates the patient on the procedure, medications or contrast media, and associated biological effects in a clear and professional manner to alleviate fear and anxiety.
• Mentors and fosters a constructive teaching environment that helps students and new technologists build confidence in their skills, knowledge and abilities.
CLERICAL.
• Performs general clerical tasks, such as answering phones; updating patient appointments; retrieving, entering, revising patient electronic health records (EHR); or updating the laboratory information system (LIS) and radiology information systems (RIS).
• Prepares and completes accurate documentation related to patient, procedures (includes screening and written consent forms), and exam charges.
• Inventories and orders accessories and supplies periodically to maintain established stock levels.
SAFETY.
• Implements protection devices and safety standards to minimize radiation exposure (as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA)) to self, staff and patients.
• Maintains a clean, neat, and safe working environment, including cleaning and disinfecting equipment after each procedure.
• Inspects and calibrates equipment accordingly for proper operation and records the quality control (QC) results, reporting any malfunctions to the supervisor.
COMPLIANCE.
• Maintains strictest confidence of all patient Protected Health Information (PHI) and protects all PHI from accidental, intentional, or inappropriate disclosure.
• Performs quality sonographic examinations in compliance with department standards, policies, and procedures, as well as local, state and federal regulatory agencies to deliver the highest level of patient privacy and care.
• Prepares, administers, and documents medications and contrast media in accordance with state and federal regulations.
• Retains certification and completes mandated continuing education requirements to meet facility and regulatory agencies accreditation and licensure requirements.
EDUCATION:
Other: Graduation from an accredited Cardiac Sonography Program
CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE:
BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider
2 of the following:
RCS (CCI)-Registered Cardiac Sonographer
ACS (CCI) - Advanced Cardiac Sonographer
ARDMS - RDCS(AE) - Adult
ARDMS - RDCS(PE) - Pediatric
ARDMS - RDCS(FE) - Fetal
ARDMS - RVT - Registered Vascular Technologist (allowed for those who entered this job prior to 06/17/2024)
OR Performs one of the following:
+ Acquisition and post processing high complexity 3D/4D imaging and strain imaging
+ Imaging pre and post structural heart transthoracic echocardiograms
+ Left ventricular Assist Device and ECMO Imaging
+ Cardiac transplant patients
+ Adult congenital patients
+ Involvement in cardiac research projects that incorporate echocardiography
+ Vascular modalities in addition to cardiac imaging
+ Cardiac MRI acquisition and analysis
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
5 years recent relevant experience.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
Advanced knowledge of diagnostic cardiac sonography principles, procedures, views, and equipment, including substantial experience responding to traumas, code blues, medical alerts, STAT calls, and various hospital emergencies.
Skilled in performing cardiac sonographic examinations with an extensive understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology so as to recognize, prioritize and communicate suspicious or abnormal results.
Possess written and verbal communications skills to explain sensitive information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, including non-medical people.
Exceptional time management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize assignments and work within standardized operating procedures and scientific methods to achieve objectives and meet deadline
Robust knowledge of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook) and related information systems (Radiology (RIS), laboratory (LIS), electronic health records (EHR), EPIC, and picture archive and communication system (PACS).
Prioritize activities and work within defined policies, procedures, and practices to achieve objectives and meet deadlines; help determine appropriate approach for new assignments
Work independently, as well as be part of the team, including accomplishing multiple tasks in an environment with interruptions.
Use experience and existing precedents or procedures to resolve atypical or infrequent problems; provide informal guidance and support to junior team members.
Ensure the privacy of each patient’s PHI.
Build collaborate relationships with peers and other healthcare providers to achieve departmental and corporate objectives
