Position Summary
IOWN Renewable Energy is [Senior] Manager, Engineering to join our growing team. The ideal candidate will be an engineering subject matter expert with a strong background in project development, interconnection, and technical design, particularly in the utility-scale BESS sector. This role will be crucial in providing technical leadership throughout the development and execution phases of our projects and will be responsible for managing engineering service providers, contractors, consultants, and other specialists to deliver high quality engineering work products.
Responsibilities
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Technical Project Development:
- Provide technical guidance for utility-scale renewable energy projects, with a focus on BESS; support solar and wind projects as needed.
- Manage electrical and other engineers to develop design packages in accordance with technical, commercial, and code requirements.
- Work closely with project development, permitting, legal, and finance teams to integrate permitting requirements into project plans and schedules. Ensure alignment between permitting activities and overall project objectives.
- Assess project feasibility and lead design, site selection, and layout optimization activities.
- Lead technical aspects of grid interconnection, including preparing interconnection applications, studies, and negotiations with grid operators.
- Collaborate with grid operators, utilities, and stakeholders to address technical challenges related to project interconnection and grid integration.
- Ensure engineering deliverables are provided on time and within budget; manage third party engineers to meet or exceed expectations.
Engineering Expertise:
- Act as the in-house technical expert, guiding project teams on design, grid integration, performance optimization, and regulatory compliance.
- Prepare technical specifications, scopes of work and other contract exhibits, pulling in third party experts as needed.
- Oversee the technical evaluation of technologies in support of procurement activities.
- Stay updated on advancements in BESS, solar, and wind technologies to incorporate best practices into projects.
- Mentor and provide leadership to junior team members, promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Technical Coordination & Execution:
- Coordinate with internal teams (development, permitting, procurement, construction) to integrate technical aspects into project workflows.
- Collaborate with estimating team to review scopes of work and costing assumptions.
- Review and approve technical designs, specifications, and layouts to ensure they meet project goals and industry standards.
- Conduct technical reviews of third-party engineering deliverables and provide feedback to ensure they align with project requirements.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications, Education and Experience
A minimum of bachelor's degree in a business or technical discipline or equivalent experience in a related field.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline. Advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in utility-scale renewable energy engineering, with a focus on BESS; experience in solar and wind.
- Strong expertise in technical design, including single-line diagrams, electrical layouts, and interconnection processes.
- Proven ability to lead the technical aspects of renewable energy projects, particularly in BESS.
- In-depth knowledge of industry standards, regulatory requirements, and safety protocols for utility-scale renewable energy projects.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to translate complex technical concepts to a variety of stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently while providing subject matter expertise in a collaborative team environment.
- Self-motivated with a high level of initiative and accountability.
- Excellent written and oral communication and organizational skills.
- Current driver's license and ability to travel extensively is required. Maintain legally required insurance.
- Excellent computer skills working with various office equipment, computers and various programs including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, etc. and the ability to effectively work on spreadsheets, word processing, networking, and e-mail programs.
- Most work is performed in a temperature-controlled office environment.
- The employee will occasionally lift and or carry up to 25 lbs.
- Travel up to 25%
- Employee may use computer, phone, copier and other office equipment in the course of a day.

Actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to internal pay equity, skill set, education, licenses and certifications, geographic location, essential job duties and requirements, and the necessary experience relative to the job's minimum qualifications. An additional discretionary bonus structure or incentives may be offered as part of the overall compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, dental, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
