As an Senior Assistant Actuary for Legal & General America you will support the innovation of risk selection and risk pricing by using various modeling and analytical techniques including traditional actuarial approaches and new data science methods including machine learning algorithms.
Responsibilities:Your daily activities may include:
Underwriting innovation and risk pricing:
- Design and build actuarial analyses to evaluate the performance of existing underwriting practices (e.g. application questions, medical evidence, 3rd party data, underwriting guidelines) assessing impact on expected mortality, new business, and LGA costs. Similarly evaluate proposed changes in underwriting practice.
- Develop application methodologies (question types, interview approach, data comparisons, etc) capable of predicting individual applicant non-disclosure.
- Develop good understanding of LGA’s automated underwriting engine, and proactively identify areas for improvement.
- Grow trusted relationships with senior underwriters in LGA and also within LGI in the UK, collaborating on projects and sharing information.
Optimization of automated underwriting
- Collaborate with Business Intelligence team to design and build tools for interrogating automated underwriting data
- Review performance of automated underwriting rules, identifying opportunities for enhancements and efficiencies
- Work with Underwriting to modify automated underwriting rules in response to new 3rd party data or changes to underwriting guideline
Underwriting and risk control for new partnerships and business ventures
- Collaborate with Underwriting, Pricing, Product Development to develop the underwriting and risk control for new products developed by LGA for its distribution partners
- Monitor underwriting effectiveness and mix of risk for new products and business ventures, raising issues for further review, and ensuring risk mitigations are implemented
- Communicate internally and externally with stakeholders to keep all relevant parties informed of changes to underwriting and the mix of risk
Critical Policyholder behavior analysis
- Carry out actuarial analyses into the impact of policyholder behaviors on business value across relevant accounting methods.
- Contribute to cross-functional teams, identifying LGA actions that will optimize behavioral outcomes.
Data
- Collaborate with Data Science and Business Intelligence to obtain appropriate data to carry out actuarial analyses.
- Establish regular pattern of updating and reviewing data, to support annual cycle of work, and to identify issues that need addressing off-cycle.
Communication
- Draft papers and reports summarizing the findings of actuarial investigations.
- Prepare management reports describing recommendations
- Effectively delegate work within Product Performance and provide regular progress reports to leadership
Education
BS/BA Math/Statistics/Actuarial Science/Business
FSA or Career ASA
Experience/Knowledge:
FSA with a minimum of 6 years of experience OR
Career ASA with 12+ years of experience
Skills
Proficient in data manipulation (R, Python, Excel, Tableau preferred)
Proficient in drafting documents (Word and PowerPoint preferred)
Highly collaborative with ability to be a team player on cross-functional teams
Excellent communicator
Organization and documentation
Ability to multi-task in a deadline-oriented environment
“Self starting” with internal motivation and initiative
What’s in it for you?
The expected hiring compensation range for this position is $121,000 - $166,450. This is a remote opportunity operating on EST.
The total compensation package for this position may include other elements, such as a sign-on bonus, long term incentives, and annual bonuses. This role is eligible to participate in the Legal & General America Annual Incentive Plan. The current target payment for the position is 20% of base salary, modified for corporate and individual performance. Bonuses are pro-rated based on start date. This role has 20 vacation days and 10 sick days that are accrued on a bi-weekly basis. Employees also have 9 paid holidays throughout the calendar year.
