Minimum Education and Work Experience:
Graduation from high school, possession of a high school equivalency diploma, or a high school individual education plan diploma and either:
- Completion of 60 credit hours at a New York State registered or regionally accredited college or university which must have included at least 12 credit hours in accounting or bookkeeping and one year of experience maintaining financial accounts and records, OR
- Three years of experience maintaining financial accounts and records; OR
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
Job Duties:
- Reviews various complex financial documents, classifies them, and distributes items into accounts according to prescribed procedures and policies.
- Posts figures to appropriate accounts, makes necessary adjustments, and verifies and reconciles balances.
- Renews the status of accounts and takes appropriate action, such as authorizing payment, issuing checks, or preparing bills.
- Tracks, audits, and monitors a variety of accounts, ensuring adjustments are made for correct allocations.
- Prepares more complex financial or statistical summary reports.
- Checks accuracy of computations and completeness, supervising the preparation of daily, weekly, and monthly reports for Federal or State reimbursements.
- Types accounting and financial statements, payrolls, statistical tabulations, and data using a keyboard, word processor, or personal computer.
- Prepares funds for deposit into book accounts, reconciles accounts, and generates reports.
- Contacts clients, vendors, or other agencies to obtain additional information.
- Provides information orally or in writing in response to inquiries on the status of accounts.
- Processes, sorts, indexes, records, and files control records and reports.
- Operates calculator, computer terminal, check-writing machines, and other related office equipment.
- Performs complex payroll transactions or may handle payroll for an entire department, preparing related reports.
- Assists in the preparation of figures and reports for use in budget preparation.
- May administer employee health and dental benefit plans.
- May supervise employees by assigning and reviewing completed work and instructing employees in specialized account-keeping activities.
Preferred Skills:
- Good knowledge of modern methods of keeping and reviewing financial accounts and records, including computer financial software.
- Familiarity with office terminology, procedures, and equipment.
- Proficiency in business arithmetic and English.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Capability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of account-keeping and clerical staff.
- Skill in making difficult arithmetic computations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages accurately.
- Analytical and organizational skills for data analysis and report preparation.
- Proficiency in operating a personal computer and utilizing common office software programs, including word processing, spreadsheet, and databases.
- Effective communication and diplomatic skills for interacting with the public.
