JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
The Safety Specialist plays a vital role and will work closely with the operations and HR teams to identify safety issues, create plans to correct issues; and disseminate updated safety information to all regional managers. This role will require the candidate to work collaboratively and have the ability to train and coach individuals at all levels within the organization. Safety Specialists will be tasked with evaluating current systems and then building a comprehensive plan to improve safety training and procedures.
Responsibilities:
Evaluate current safety policies and procedures and construct a plan to ensure consistent compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, develop a short- and long-term strategic safety plan
Identify best practices and lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce risks, raise safety awareness, and improve safe work practices
Assist with creating and maintaining an environment in which our teams can efficiently and safely utilize their skills, fulfill their responsibilities, and maximize their potential
Assist regions with forming a viable Safety Committee, and running successful monthly meetings
Assist regions in creating/updating emergency action plans for employees at each site
Participate in orientation for all new employees, ensure new employees have adequate training to safely complete their tasks
Train and coach employees on safety procedures and protocols
Coordinate with other departments to ensure that safety protocols are understood and consistently being followed
Train team and assist in conducting safety inspections and audits to identify potential hazards, assign team members safety corrections, and track progress to completion. Including regular safety inspections for fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, emergency lights, forklifts etc.
Work with HR to develop best practices for accident investigation, train regional teams with investigating accidents to determine their root cause, and develop corrective action plans
Create an ongoing facility-sustaining JSA process
Evaluate installation and safe operation of all new equipment, ensure SOP’s and JSA’s are created
Works with first-line supervisors to design job specific training and ensure delivery; coach and counsel employees
Develop and maintain safety records and reports, Communicate safety goals track performance
Participates in any variety of meetings and work groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems, and maintain specified level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements, policies, and State and Government guidelines and reporting
Responsible for Tier 2 filings, storm water permits and training and other state and local environmental compliance training
Ensure all regional managers receive reporting for all required safety testing records, ensure records are up to date
Review, update and standardized SDS practices
Stay up-to-date with changes in safety regulations and industry best practices
Lead by example to promote and encourage employees to commit to all employee safety, employee culture, and quality programs
Team oriented, job may include more duties than what is listed
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in related field preferred
Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in manufacturing safety-related role with progressive responsibilities
Knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations
Thorough knowledge of applicable regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT/FMCSA)
In-depth knowledge of OSH guidelines and practices
Experience in reporting and developing policies
Exceptional relationship builder, communication, and interpersonal skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Proven ability to think independently and handle multiple projects through to completion.
Record of successfully collaborating with and influencing senior management and peers
Able to work independently and as part of a team
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
Able to motivate people, specifically mentoring and coaching individuals to meet goals.
Able to work effectively within cross-functional teams and in an environment of rapid change.
Organized, detail-oriented, and deadline driven
Confident, positive, and trustworthy with the highest degree of integrity
Valid driver’s license, willing to travel up to 35%
Proficient in MS Office
