About the Job
Upper Merion Township, located in King of Prussia, PA, seeks energetic, highly motivated, reliable Swim Instructors who will report directly to the Pool Staff. The swim instructors provide direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for swimming classes students of all ages and abilities. They also exhibit exceptional customer service to promote Township aquatics programs.
The duties of the Swim Instructor include (but are not limited to):
- Must be observant, safety-conscious, and able to react calmly and quickly in an emergency.
- Ensures swimmers are well supervised and remain close to all students at all times.
- Must teach skills as taught in in-service training.
- Teach with encouragement and positive reinforcement.
- Dress appropriately for class (females must wear a one-piece bathing suit)
- Must be able to demonstrate all skills.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work without supervision.
- Know and enforce pool rules as needed.
- Be familiar with the location of all emergency equipment and first aid supplies.
- Attend all mandatory staff meetings and in-service training.
- Performs light maintenance, cleaning, and trash removal in all public areas as assigned.
- Work as scheduled, or find a substitute instructor to cover shifts and notify the supervisor of change.
- Set up all learn-to-swim equipment before class and return it to storage at the end of your shift.
- During downtime, perform duties of facility assistant.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be 14 years and older
- Must pass a basic swim test
- Must demonstrate maturity, reliability, problem-solving, courtesy, and excellent communication skills.
- Flexible to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds.
- Current clearances (child abuse, criminal background, FBI clearance)
Physical Characteristics:
- Ability to work indoors/outdoors with no temperature control and routine sun exposure.
- Ability to work on uneven and/or slippery surfaces and periodically exposed to hazardous conditions.
- Ability to withstand regular exposure to chlorine and other pool chemicals.
