Registered Nurse/Operations Supervisor, Nursing Administration Unit - Valley Presbyterian

Job Summary

• The Operations Supervisor serves as the hospital administrative liaison accountable for providing clinical/patient care support on the evenings, nights and holidays.  
• Under the supervision of the Director of Clinical Resource Management, the Operations Supervisor is primarily responsible for providing clinical support, facilitating efficient patient throughput, maintaining standards/regulatory requirements, and assuming the administrative role in crisis and disaster situations.  
• Additionally, the Operations Supervisor functions as a resource, providing timely and effective problem resolutions to overall operations for the hospital. 
• The Operations Supervisor responds to and manages difficult patient care problems and unplanned emergent events, while promoting and maintaining communication with clinical, medical, and managerial staff.
• The Operations Supervisor serves as a professional role model and leader, identifying and assisting with the furtherance of the goals and objectives of the organization.

Education

• Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after April 2023, with an associate degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within 30 days of employment and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date.

Licenses and Certifications

• Current licensure with the California Board of Registered Nursing
• Current American Heart Association  Healthcare Provider BLS certification
• Successful completion and maintenance of ACLS, PALS, and MAB certification at the time of hire/transfer or within the first 30 days of employment/transfer
• Successful completion and maintenance of a LA County Fire Card certification at the time of hire/transfer or within the first 30 days of employment/transfer
• Must successfully complete and maintain certification for Mgmt of Assaultive Behavior (ex. CPI- Non-violent Crisis Intervention) within 30 days of employment

Experience

• Minimum of three years of critical care /emergency nursing experience with demonstrated excellence in clinical nursing practice and leadership.
• Previous experience as a House Supervisor/Operations Supervisor preferred

Required Skills

Clinical

• Serves as resource to staff on clinical and safety issues utilizing available resources to assist when needed.
• Supports staff in detecting and reporting medication errors and adverse patient outcomes, per hospital policy.
• Responds to all hospital codes and other emergency situations to assess and assist with patient care and staffing.
• Understands the scope of practice, clinical, admission, acuity criteria, and competency of staff to ensure appropriate patient placement and care.

Throughput

• Provides overall direction, guidance, and coordination to healthcare providers in optimizing patient throughput.
• Continually rounds on clinical units to determine tentative, pending, and actual discharges, identifying and removing barriers to transfers or admissions.
• Assists with the transfer of patients to a higher or lower level of care.
• Advocates for Charge Nurses working in the “three bed ahead” model, identifying and prioritizing the next three beds to be targeted for patient placement.
• Leads bed board meeting or other real time meetings to falcate patient flow, particularly during times of high census.
• Mediates conflict between families and staff, physicians and staff, and other departments, as they relate to patient flow by using policies and procedures to promote patient satisfaction.
• Utilizes appropriate judgment in placing patients in proper units according to diagnosis, principles of infection control and patient condition, and age of patient
• Provides feedback to staff, charge nurses, medical staff, and leadership re: issues impeding throughput and participates in actively identifying solutions.

Administrative Leadership

• Keeps the Chief Nursing Officer/Executive Leaders informed of circumstances or situations which have or may have serious impact.
• Uses effective collaborative strategies (e.g. timely notification of managers/directors of potential problems or concerns, and is proactive by presenting suggested solutions at the time manager/director is made aware of problem)
• Collaborates with other managers and directors to ensure consistent implementation and monitoring of policies, practices, and budgetary accountability.
• Demonstrates effective, collaborative communication and conflict resolution skills.
• Works effectively with physicians, staff and the leadership team.
• Participates in committees, task force meetings and projects to benefit the organization.

• Provides adequate staffing for the following shift based on staffing patterns, patient acuity and recommendations of the unit managers or designees.
• Assumes the duties as outlined in the Emergency Preparedness Plan during emergency situations as appropriate.
• Supports Nursing Office in verifying licenses, certifications, and other requirements of permanent and contract employees.
• Recognizes and responds to priorities, accepts changes and new ideas. Has insight into problems and the ability to develop workable alternatives.
• Observes hospital and departmental policies governing conduct while performing hospital rounds (e.g. telephone and computer use, smoking regulations, breaks and other related policies) and approaches staff who are noncompliant.
• Submits an Administrative Report at the end of each work day.
• Notifies the OR team of emergency cases after hours and notifies OR schedulers of pending OR requests.
• Understand, respects and displays sensitivity to culture, age and persons with disabilities.
• Participates actively and positively affects the outcomes of customer service activities.

• Participates in all departmental specific training, Environment of Care (injury/illness prevention, fire/life  safety, hazardous materials, emergency preparedness, utilities management, medical equipment management, safety and security management), infection control (standard precautions, TB Exposure Control Plan, Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan).
• Demonstrates knowledge of and follows safety practices.  Understands the importance of safety, including patient safety in the work place.  Maintains a safe environment for self and others.
• Actively participates in the Patient Safety Program, including event reporting.  Identifies sentinel events/near misses and responds per defined organization processes.  Participates in education activities and process implementation.  Demonstrates advocacy for the patient/customer and appropriately acknowledges patients, customers and visitors.

Salary Range: $55.17 - $81.28 per hour
