The Opportunity
- The primary focus of the SSM Regional EMS Medical Director will be clinical oversight, public relations, and ensuring department-level quality clinical competency.
- Communicate and champion Vituity's purpose, mission, vision, values, culture of brilliance, and strategy, ensuring widespread understanding and alignment.
- Ensure that EMS providers adhere to clinical protocols and evidence-based practices, and follow their own departmental polices.
- Provide medical direction for a vast array of diverse EMS districts (over 30 currently). Leader will guide clinical protocol development, case reviews, and quality improvement efforts. Necessary skills include clinical decision-making, protocol optimization, and field-provider education. Medical Direction can involve active oversight and patient direction as well as case review and quality oversight leadership.
- Leadership, education, and management with a dyad regional EMS Director. Joint leadership in clinical education, mentorship, and development of EMS providers.
- Monitor current and future healthcare and economic trends. Assess their potential impact on the practice and local geographic region.
- Engage with hospital leadership, health system leaders, and EMS Providers to improve patient care pathways and grow regional pre-hospital networks.
- Lead regional pre-hospital quality and medical service work groups, including groups with a focus on pre-hospital time critical diagnosis and treatment, pre-hospital sepsis care and pre-hospital ECMO delivery.
- Strategize and execute a comprehensive annual region management plan to enhance patient outcomes, improve pre-hospital care standards, and align EMS protocols with evolving clinical guidelines.
- Demonstrate unwavering mastery of Vituity policies and fiduciary obligations, ensuring strict adherence from all providers.
- Exemplify Vituity's Partnership Principles by fostering open communication and transparent decision-making, such as conducting annual reviews of administrative stipends and scheduling preferences.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of hospital expectations and rigorously uphold compliance with all contract terms.
- Monitor operational and quality metrics, with a focus on clinical outcomes, patient safety, and EMS provider performance for the region.
- Continuously assess and improve operational processes, leveraging technology and best practices to improve clinical outcomes.
- Deliver educational and training services to contracted EMS, ambulance, and fire protection districts by providing ongoing clinical education, protocol updates, and hands-on training to ensure that EMS providers are equipped with the latest medical knowledge and skills.
- Assist in development of annual budgets and financial planning with a focus on resource allocation that directly impacts clinical training, technology for EMS, and service sustainability.
- Assist with the recruitment and training processes for new EMS liaisons, creating an environment that fosters clinical competency and knowledge-sharing among EMS providers ensuring the practice is staffed with highly qualified professionals.
- Provide learning and development opportunities as well as mentoring to providers and staff to enhance their clinical acumen, leadership skills, and overall professional growth.
- Involvement and leadership in the ongoing regional EMS collaborative leadership committees and work groups that have an emphasis on enhancing clinical care protocols, quality improvement initiatives, and treatment strategies in prehospital care.
- Develop, foster, and maintain productive and collaborative working relationships with hospital leadership, nursing staff, and other healthcare team members.
- Ensure practice is appropriately represented and demonstrates their value through leadership roles (as applicable) and/or participation with hospital management, medical staff leadership, Medical Executive, Medical Staff and other hospital committees, and within the local community.
Required Experience and Competencies
- Licensed physician as a Medical Doctor (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree from an accredited medical school and completion of residency through an accredited residency program required.
- Fellowship in EMS Medicine (2-year accredited Emergency Medicine Fellowship) preferred.
- Clinical leadership demonstrated by exemplary bedside care, and an emphasis on protocol development, clinical mentorship, case review, and evidence-based practice.
- Maintain membership and privileges on Hospital's medical staff and comply with and abide by the bylaws, rules and regulations, and the policies and procedures of Hospital's medical staff where services are being provided required.
- Active participation in local, state, and national EMS professional associations.
- Physician Partnership status required.
- Five (5) years or more experience in a leadership role required.

The Practice
SSM Health System - Saint Louis, Missouri
- Clinical Emergency Medicine Practice at one of the following community hospitals: SSM DePaul, SSM St. Joseph's West - Lake Saint Louis, SSM St. Joseph's - St. Charles, SSM St. Mary's, and SSM St. Clare.
- Oversight and medical direction of over 30 Ambulance and Fire Protection Districts in the Greater St. Louis (Missouri and Illinois) region.
- Specialty availability (STEMI Center, Stroke Center, and specific Trauma designations) and sub-specialties on call.
- Strong nursing culture.
- Nationally recognized engaged regional EMS providers and leadership.
- Leader will be part of the regional leadership team at SSM.
