The City of Havre de Grace, Maryland, is seeking highly qualified individuals who are interested in a career in law enforcement. Qualified applicants will undergo rigorous testing and evaluation before being considered for a future class in a certified Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission Police Academy.
Written Examination:
- Applicants who meet the required job qualifications will be scheduled to take a written examination.
- Qualified applicants will receive an email notification of their scheduled test date, time, and location, so make sure that your email address is correct when applying for this position. Physical Agility Test:
Applicants who pass the written exam will be invited to participate in physical agility testing at a later date. You will be contacted about the physical agility test date, time, and location by the Police Department.
The physical agility test includes:
- Sit-up test - measures muscular endurance
- Push-ups - measures absolute strength
- Trigger squeeze/slide pull - measures hand strength
- 1.5 mile run - measures cardiovascular capacity
Medical Examination and Comprehensive Background Investigation:
Applicants must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screen, and a comprehensive background investigation, which includes a criminal background check, psychological and polygraph examination, and fingerprinting.
Police Academy:
Upon successful completion of the background investigation and medical examination, applicants who have passed both the written and physical agility tests will be considered for a future class in a certified Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission Police Academy.
The police academy is comprised of an academic, physical, and practical training program that introduces recruits to a career in law enforcement.
Career as a Police Officer:
Employees in this classification may be assigned to work on either a rotating or fixed shift basis, which will include nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Employees in this classification are subject to call-to-duty in emergencies, and may be required to work overtime with little or no notice. Upon completion of the academy training, officers will be assigned to a patrol squad at the discretion of the Chief of Police.
The work of this classification entails frequent walking, standing, and the operation of vehicles and firearms. Work requires exposure to potentially hazardous law enforcement and public safety activities and conditions such as adverse weather and armed and dangerous persons.
Responsibilities:
- Participates in all required training, both at the Police Academy and on-the-job, to learn the duties of and maintain the proficiency requirements for the classification of Police Officer
- Performs general patrol duties in a vehicle and on foot
- Conducts initial and follow up investigations of crimes and other incidents and events
- Identifies and determines possible solutions to community crime problems
- Enforces traffic laws and ordinances and investigates traffic accidents
- Arrests and detains persons
- Provides administrative and technical support throughout the department
- Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 20 1/2 years old to apply and 21 years old upon completion of the Police Academy
- Must have a high school diploma, GED, or appropriate equivalent
- Must be a citizen of the United States
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Must be able to pass the written examination
- Must be able to pass the physical agility examination
- Must successfully complete the psychological evaluation and polygraph examination
- Must successfully complete the background investigation process
- Must successfully complete a physical and medical examination
- If hired, must successfully complete a certified Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission Police Academy
