Radiation Therapist
Location: Chicago, IL

Department: Radiology Therapeutic
Work Type: Full Time (Total FTE between 0.9 and 1.0)
Shift: Shift 1
Work Schedule: 10 Hr (6:30:00 AM - 5:00:00 PM)

Summary:
The Radiation Therapist participates in the coordination of radiation treatment delivery and planning processes for Radiation Oncology patients at Rush University Medical Center. Incumbent must function confidently by supervising and overseeing daily treatment and simulation activities. Professional competency, strong interpersonal skills, leadership, initiative and good judgment in problem solving are essential to the position. Enforce compliance with all policies, standard operating procedures, and regulations related to routine operations. Maintain courteous, helpful, professional image at all times. Promote teamwork by working together with other department staff and peers. Provide positive and departmentally supportive influence to the work group. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and ICARE values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Required Job Qualifications:
•Three years’ experience and three years college.
•Graduate of an accredited program in Radiation Therapy Technology.
•Experience working as a radiation therapist in a progressive radiation oncology department.
•Knowledge of use and care of therapeutic radiation equipment and principles of clinical radiation therapy.
•Registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) as a Radiation Therapist and Continuing Education (CE).
•Specialized training, administrative or technical background: mathematics, secretarial or mechanical work experience.
•Organization and managerial skills, attention to detail, precision, accuracy, and professionalism.
•Ability to exercise discretion and judgment.
•Ability to keep patient health information confidential.
•Ability to work harmoniously with patients and staff.
•Ability to grasp sophisticated detail.
•Able to operate: calculator, computer, linear accelerator, CT Simulator, Tomotherapy Unit Software Programs: Clinical Information/Management System, and scanning software and equipment.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree or Graduate degree.
•Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
•Ability to use MOSAIQ and EPIC.
Physical Demands:
•This position may cause physical and mental fatigue from performing the work.
Responsibilities:
1. Approval of department/section budget; recommending expenditures for approval.
2. Light supervision, supervisor determines assignments, priorities and deadlines, refer questionable cases to supervisor. Overall objectives are set by supervisor; projects, priorities and deadlines are jointly developed.
3. Position regularly performs work that is the same as, or similar to, that which is performed by subordinates.
4. Utilizes radiation and other equipment in planning and administering radiation treatments to cancer patients.
5. Accurately sets treatment parameters.
6. Positions patients and applies auxiliary devices for immobilization.
7. Administers and records treatment.
8. Utilizes the simulator to plan patient treatments.
9. Interprets computerized treatment plans.
10. Enters and maintains information in the clinical information management system.
11. Performs warm-up and QA on the treatment unit.
12. Observes patients for evidence of complications and reports appropriately to the nurse or physician.
13. Obtains beam films of treatment area.
14. Calculates monitor unit settings.
15. Maintains work area according to departmental policy.
16. Assists in keeping areas stocked with supplies.
17. Adheres to universal precautions.
18. Follows all appropriate radiation protection standards.
19. Assures that room and equipment are maintained per policy.
20. Supports quality improvement and customer service activities.
21. Interacts with patients, staff, visitors and all others with an appropriate customer service orientation.
22. Attends and participates in chart rounds and other department meetings as assigned.
23. Maintains competence through attendance at mandatory and other job-related educational opportunities.
24. Run equipment checklists and set-ups, assist chief therapist in the coordination and reporting of preventive maintenance on assigned equipment, report equipment issues to chief therapist and Administrative Director, and participate/perform other tasks as assigned.
25. Interacts with both internal contacts (i.e. department staff, radiation oncologists, physicists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, nurses) and external contacts (i.e. Rush University Medical Center staff, referring physicians, patients and their families).
