Position Summary

Administrative Functions
- Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities in compliance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines.
- Develop, maintain, and update written policies and procedures governing nursing service operations.
- Ensure that reference materials (e.g., PDRs, regulations, standards of practice) at nurses' stations are current.
- Recommend resources to support the nursing service department in meeting residents' needs.
- Ensure the Nursing Service Procedures Manual is current and aligns with the facility's practices.
- Provide written and oral reports/recommendations to the Director regarding nursing service operations.
- Periodically review policies, procedures, and job descriptions, recommending revisions as needed.
- Develop methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services.
- Participate in the facility's quality assurance program for the nursing service department.
- Assist in planning the nursing services portion of residents' discharge plans.
- Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, and charting as required.
Committee Functions
- Attend and contribute to various facility committees (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment).
- Assist in preparing reports for nursing service programs and activities.
- Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee.
- Participate in care plan committee meetings and ensure discharge plans align with the residents' needs.
- Implement committee recommendations as directed.
Personnel Functions
- Ensure adequate staffing levels to maintain quality care.
- Develop work assignments and delegate responsibilities as necessary.
- Conduct daily rounds to ensure nursing staff compliance with standards and procedures.
- Monitor absenteeism and address staffing challenges.
- Maintain positive working relationships within and across departments to support residents' care.
- Participate in employee evaluations, staffing requirements, and disciplinary actions in alignment with facility policies.
Nursing Care Functions
- Oversee new admissions, room readiness, and initial resident interactions.
- Ensure timely and proper documentation of nursing care, including progress notes and physician orders.
- Conduct daily visits to residents to monitor physical and emotional status.
- Provide direct nursing care, including IV administration, specimen collection, and vital signs monitoring, as needed.
- Address and resolve problem areas related to resident care.
- Assist the Charge Nurse in monitoring critically ill residents.
- Ensure adherence to policies regarding medication administration, storage, and treatment schedules.
- Inspect nursing areas daily to maintain cleanliness and safety standards.
Staff Development
- Participate in planning and conducting in-service training to educate nursing staff.
- Assist in developing facility training programs, including OSHA, TB, HIPAA, and safety protocols.
- Attend continuing education programs to stay updated on professional practices.
Safety and Sanitation
- Develop and implement safety standards and infection control procedures.
- Ensure nursing service personnel comply with safety and hygiene protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Conduct routine inspections to ensure cleanliness and safety in nursing areas.
- Participate in emergency preparedness and infection control programs.
Equipment and Supply Functions
- Recommend equipment and supply needs for the nursing department.
- Ensure proper stock levels of medications, medical supplies, and equipment.
- Develop procedures for the safe operation of equipment and ensure only trained personnel operate it.
- Monitor supply usage to minimize waste.
Care Plan and Assessment Functions
- Participate in the development of written assessments and care plans for residents.
- Encourage residents' participation in care planning.
- Ensure nursing personnel reference care plans when providing daily care.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university.
- Training in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
- Minimum of 2 years' experience, preferably in a long-term care facility.
Language Skills
- Proficient in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Active RN license in this state.
- Current CPR certification.
- Knowledge of PCC preferred.
