Serves as a resource for inpatient and outpatient units at Methodist West Hospital by rounding on patients at high risk for decompensation as well as responding to all medical emergencies and Rapid Response Team activations in the hospital. As a member of the interdisciplinary team, contributes professional nursing knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients and their families. Maintains a practice environment that reflects the ANA Code for Nurses, Philosophy of Nursing at UnityPoint Health, within the structure of the Professional Nurse Practice Model and in collaboration of other care providers.

Responsibilities:Clinical Excellence/Patient Care · The Rapid Response Nurse serves as a nurse consultant for all patient care areas at Methodist West Hospital 24 hours per day, seven days per week. · The primary function of this RN is to be the team leader for adult medical emergencies. · Proactive purposeful rounding with each unit with a focus on patients of concern (i.e., sepsis, cardiac, and/or high-risk patients). · Rounding on each unit every four hours as well as being a resource for nursing team members for high-risk patients. · Encourage teaching and collaboration with other team members on units. For example, completing tasks such as NG placement, Foley Catheter placement, IV starts, and blood administration together. · Serve as a resource in the Emergency Department when not completing every four-hour rounding or responding to Rapid Response or Medical Emergency calls. · Attend all daily RESPECT huddles in the Emergency Department and report any significant concerns/issues with ED Shift Leader for awareness. · Provide advice and consultation to all units around nurse sensitive indicators and quality metrics (i.e., restraints, mobilization, CHF, Braden Scale, hand hygiene). |
Clinical Excellence/Patient Care · Assess the needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care. · Develops an individual plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient, family, and health care team. · Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient’s care. · Delivers high quality care utilizing the nursing process while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required on assigned unit in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards of care. · Utilizes holistic approach (considering biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area. · Delegates and provides direction for other health care team members within their scope of practice and holds them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care. · Utilizes critical thinking in developing nursing interventions while maintaining responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients. · Assesses and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patients and their families’ age-specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn, and level of comprehension. · Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education. · Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents, and infections, and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately. |
Basic UPH Performance Criteria · Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines. · Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance. · Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position. · Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare. · Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year. · Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Education:
| Graduate of accredited nursing program | BSN degree |
Experience:
| 2 years of critical care experience (ED or ICU).
This RN must exemplify sound clinical judgment, advocacy and moral agency, caring practices, collaboration, systems thinking, response to diversity, facilitation of learning, and clinical inquiry. | A combination of ED and Adult ICU experience greater than or equal to 2 years. |
License(s)/Certification(s):
| Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa.
Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain within three (3) months from date of hire.
Current ACLS certification.
Current Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC) and/or Trauma Care After Resuscitation (TCAR) certification.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and/or Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC) required within 12 months of hire.
Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons. | Certification in Emergency Nursing (CEN) or Certification in Critical Care Nursing (CCRN) are strongly encouraged. |
