The UC Irvine Student Health Center is a comprehensive outpatient clinic staffed with licensed primary care physicians, psychiatrists, licensed clinical social workers, dentists, physician assistants, registered nurse practitioners, and registered nurses. Medical specialists from various disciplines including dermatology, orthopedics/sports medicine, gynecology, internal medicine, and ENT provide on-site consultation on a regular basis. Student Health also offers basic radiology and clinical laboratory services, insurance consultation, and an on-site pharmacy, making SHC a comprehensive and convenient clinic dedicated to serving students.
Under the supervision of the Chief of Psychiatry and designated delegates (licensed MD/DO, PhD/PsyD, LCSW, RN), the Psychiatric Technician is responsible for preparing and caring for patients, administering or implementing specific therapeutic procedures, techniques, and treatments as well as documenting the same to support the treatment process for patients under psychiatric care at the Student Health Center. This requires applying interpersonal and technical skills within a safe therapeutic environment and outstanding communication skills with appropriate boundaries.
As part of a psychiatric and general medical multidisciplinary team and the general administrative support staff, the Psychiatric Technician will provide timely interventions supporting the overall treatment plan and coordination of quality health care services to meet the individual patient’s specific health care needs in a cost-effective manner. The Psychiatric Technician acts as a collaborative team member with Psychiatric staff, Front and Back Office staff, Nursing, other physicians, and other building units in coordinating patient needs in the continuum of care. The position may also serve other patients of the Student Health Center when cross-coverage training is provided.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $61,533.36- $67,943.52 (Annual).
Required:
- General knowledge of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
- Fundamental knowledge of DSM-5.
- Establish effective therapeutic relationships with Psychiatry & MH Service Patients.
- Recognize symptoms requiring medical or psychiatric attention. Think and act quickly in emergencies.
- Working knowledge of using an electronic medical record (EMR) with experience in scheduling.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
- Must be able to work in a collaborative manner and have strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to use good judgment in responding to or referring questions by nurses, physicians, and other professional personnel.
- Maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health system.
- Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
- Proven computer experience and accurate data entry skills.
- Valid California Psychiatric Technician License as issued by the CA Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician Examiners.
- Must possess a current Basic Life Support (BLS)/Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) card and must maintained in accordance with the American Heart Association standards.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience Experience in psychiatric inpatient facility or outpatient mental health practice.
Preferred:
- One to three year work experience as Psychiatric Technician.
- Intermediate to Advanced Application of typing.
- Writing and verbal communication skills.
Special Conditions:
- This position’s schedule is M-F and during traditional work hours, however, weekend or non-traditional work hours may be required for special projects or busy times of the year, or when strict deadlines must be met. In the case of extended hours, this position may be required to work those hours.
- Employment in this position is contingent upon successful completion of a Department of Justice (DOJ) Live Scan background check, verification and continued monitoring or licensure as it applies to the position, and successful completion of our background review or credentialing process, as appropriate to the position.
- The employee must comply with OSHA, CA/OSHA, and CDC recommendations and requirements regarding vaccination and testing of healthcare employees. This includes, but may not be limited to; current hepatitis B immunizations, annual flu vaccinations, and annual tuberculosis screening. The employee must comply with CDPH and UC COVID-19 Vaccine Policy, by providing proof of Full Vaccination or submitting a request for Exception.
- Per the UC Ethics Briefing, the employee is responsible for reporting any and all potential conflicts of interest to their supervisor in a timely manner.
