Responsibilities
- Performs overall engineering design and engineering tasks having a high degree of complexity.
- Prepare design documents for structural systems, including calculations, drawings and structural specifications.
- Review preliminary and final plans and specifications for constructability and risk management
- Supervise the work of other Structural Engineers, Structural EITs and Technicians assigned to applicable projects; serve as a mentor for less experienced/developing Structural Engineers and Technicians
- Coordinate technical activities and designs with personnel in other disciplines and departments within the local office and/or other corporate location; serve as a liaison between clients and design team
- Evaluate structural assets against potential threat levels and conceptualize initial structural design approach for projects. Perform design calculations for blast and ballistic protection based on Charge Weights and Level of Protection. Experience with Federal (including but not limited to Department of Defense, VA, GSA) projects is greatly desired.
- Experience with Progressive Collapse Analysis is greatly desired.
- Ability to manage time and workload effectively, which includes planning, organizing and prioritizing work for Structural project teams
- Ability to successfully complete projects on time and on budget
- Assist with other duties assigned by Project Managers and Structural Engineering Studio Lead
- Act as a mentor for discipline personnel by providing continuous assistance and support through professional training and career development
- Establish design standards and procedures to manage the work of staff as well as the project teams by assisting in the review of quality assurance and quality control evaluations
- Provide oversight and assistance with writing and editing of program documents, specifications and equipment selection for building systems and devices
- Conduct and/or delegate job-site observations to ensure projects are adhering to specifications and design intent
- Participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance in relation to zoning laws, fire regulations, building codes and other ordinances; convey applicable changes of local, state, and federal regulations and ordinances to discipline appropriate personnel
- Perform other duties as assigned or instructed
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil from an accredited college or university; Master’s Degree or other advanced education is preferred
- Professional Registration as a Structural Engineer
- 8+ years experience in engineering of building systems design (pay commensurate with years in service)
- Current affiliation and/or membership with local, state, or national industry organization(s)
General Characteristics
- Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with discipline personnel, office staff, and clientele
- Demonstrated ability to promote and establish teamwork and individual leadership within the discipline
- Ability to successfully and continuously lead a team of engineering professionals to meet and exceed project, discipline, and business unit goals
- Extensive knowledge of building codes
- Familiarity with the training and resources of the Protective Design Center
- Familiar with the UFCs, TM 5-858 series, and EM1 documents
- Effective time management and organizational skills; ability to become involved in multiple projects and remain up to date on the various developmental stages
- Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills
- Extensive knowledge of façade hardening, perimeter protection, site security, and progressive collapse
- Knowledge of capabilities of AutoCAD, Revit, and other production software
- Excellent time management and organization skills; ability to multi-task
