Lombard, ILChemical Engineering – Engineering /Full Time /HybridResponsibilitiesProvide input to business development and upfront project execution effortsProvide consultation on process issues and designsIdentify a pathway to/and evaluate alternate process technologiesIdentify department procedure requirements, gaps in procedures, and help draft process department proceduresDevelop and evaluate conceptual process designsConduct inter-discipline reviews and highlight important design aspects to other departmentsCollect process data that is not readily available and make design decisions based on limited process informationDevelop complex process simulations including HTRI etc.
by utilizing the correct thermodynamic property packages and understand the limitations of simulationDevelop and/or confirm/check relief device scenarios and calculate estimated required relief loadsDevelop complex equipment and vessel process designsDevelop execution plans for projects including fast track and long lead item identificationIdentify the necessity for process control interlocksMentor young engineers by providing direction and effectively delegating work to other engineers on the teamDevelop comprehensive process scopes of workSolve client operating problems / troubleshoot existing processesRecommend potential instruments and specific instrumentation technologies for applicationsRecognize project opportunities when working with clients on other projectsUtilize estimated solutions to engineering problems versus an exact solution Develop process control strategiesUtilize the correct staff level for project tasks in order to help control budgetIdentify and resolve client design errors, open issues, or conflicting information on projectsParticipate in Process Hazard AnalysisDevelop material balances for projectsManage process projects of varying complexityWrite process department ECN’s (Engineering Change Notices)Execute P&ID walk-down efforts or field verification of P&ID’sUtilize industry codes and standards in designs and apply them accordinglyUse familiarity with process technologies and standard refining process to develop designsInteract with vendors regarding packaged processes and technologies for inclusion in process designsCheck process data on instrument data sheets and recognize the applicability/limitations of the instrument technology selectedTrack hours used to execute project tasks, review projects schedules, and complete efforts within allowed budget and scheduleIdentify out of scope work on projects and learn to resolve issues with project managementDemonstrated ability in applying engineering judgmentAssist in reviewing resumes, interviewing, and evaluating potential new hiresAll other duties as assignedTechnical CompetenciesAble to apply basic fundamentals in Chemical Engineering including fluid dynamics, chemistry, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, process unit operations and separations, basic reaction kinetics and reaction design theory, material and heat balances, etc.Understand PFD and P&ID symbology, layout, standards, and workflowUnderstand the different stages of P&IDs development and check P&IDs against the development stagesAble to modify P&IDs and check modifications against CAD drafting standards and client standardsAble to develop demolition P&IDsAble to develop and maintain drawing lists, line lists, equipment lists, and specialty items listsAble to read, understand, and utilize piping isometrics and plot plans in order to perform hydraulic calculations for compressible, incompressible and two-phase systems including dense phase and dilute phase pneumatic conveyingDemonstrate the ability to perform and document process calculations that can be easily checkedDevelop process simulations and is knowledgeable of physical property estimation packagesDevelop physical property data for the selection of instrumentationUnderstand the hierarchy of process documents in process designsKnowledgeable of typical instrumentation types and their principles of operationDemonstrated capability to accurately check work produced at all discipline skill levelsGood computer skills and familiarity with common office software as well as specialty process engineering software such as Aspen HYSYS and MathCADDemonstrated understanding of process design equations and their applicability to design engineeringDemonstrated ability to generate Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs)Ability to develop process man-hour estimates for projectsAbility to review vendor equipment designs and data for suitability to the process designAbility to develop process control strategiesCapable of drafting a process scope of work documentCapable of developing a Process Design BasisAble to specify specialty items and generate specialty item data sheets Demonstrated ability to size, select, specify, and design pressure relief devices, inlet an outlet piping, and effluent handling systemsAble to set process design conditions and develop equipment designs/sizes along with the required data sheetsQualificationsBachelor’s Degree or higher Chemical Engineering15+ years of experience in the chemical and refining process industriesMust possess exceptional interpersonal and organizational skillsMust be able to work in the US without sponsorship now or in the future$130,000 - $200,000 a yearSalaries for all position are based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to relevant experience, total years of experience in the industry, education, skills, and qualifications.
