About the Job
What We Do:
The Strategic Robotics R&D team envisions a future for robotic intervention that is targeted, minimally invasive, and personalized. Building upon a deep understanding of patient and physician needs, we are developing a platform for the next evolution of soft-tissue robotic care.
Who We Are:
We are a team of electrical, mechatronics, mechanical, robotic controls, software, and clinical engineers who are passionate about improving patient care. The team includes a wide range of experience levels, from junior engineers to industry experts. We follow an iterative design approach to product development that requires us to collaborate closely across clinical, capital hardware, and instruments & accessories teams. We value autonomy and empower each other to take action while remaining a supportive and closely-knit team. We take pride in our culture and are committed to building an environment that is inclusive and promotes diversity of thought through varied experiences and backgrounds.
You:
As a member of the Strategic Robotics R&D team, you will join us on our journey to design and build one of the world's most advanced medical robotic platforms. You will work alongside all engineering functions to make significant contributions to the electrical design of our capital hardware including (but not limited to) power electronics, control systems, sensors, high-speed communication, redundancy and network architecture. This role offers a high degree of autonomy and opportunities for growth and mentorship within the team as we progress towards realizing our vision.
Performance Objectives and Responsibilities:
- Architect, develop, design, and test printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA) of varying complexity and density. Testing may include power and signal integrity, EMI and ESD analysis, development of test fixturing, and thermal analysis.
- Iterate quickly on proof-of-concept prototypes, implement long-term commercial design solutions, and engage with vendors.
- Facilitate opportunities for multi-functional discussions to develop robust and reliable architectures with electrical functionality driven by simulation, analysis, and testing.
- Perform hardware testing for IEC medical safety and EMC standards such as IEC60601-1, IEC60601-1-2, CISPR22, and ISO compliance in a regulated environment (UL, TUV, FDA)
- Own full lifecycle design of PCAs, providing documentation to support architectural decisions such as technical reviews, test results, and theory of operations.
- Participate in design reviews, fault safety analysis, and design FMEA analysis across the broader team.
- Act as a technical lead and provide mentorship and guidance to electrical engineers with varying levels of experience.
- Bachelor's degree with 17 years or Master's with 14 years in electrical engineering or a related field. Other combinations of experience with an advanced degree. (e.g., PhD 11yr, MS 14yr, or BS 17yr).
- Demonstrated proficiency in Altium Designer or related CAD tools for schematics and PCB layout, including design best practices for power integrity, signal integrity, EMC, EMI, fast transients, and ESD.
- Strong design experience with embedded systems, serial communication protocols, and analog and digital electrical systems from feasibility through to production.
- Extensive experience designing and bringing electrical architectures in hardware solutions to market.
- Proven track record providing technical direction, mentorship, and expertise on technical/design and management of projects, including external contractors, partners, and suppliers.
Preferred:
- Experience in Robotic and/or Medical Device industry.
Perks:
- Generous vacation and hybrid work policies
- Commute assistance (Daily shuttle from SF, public transit stipend)
- Snacks, Lunch stipend for on-site cafeteria
- 401(k) match and pension program
- Healthy work/life balance (paid parental, family & volunteer leave)
- A strong culture that promotes inclusion, growth, and innovation
