Description
Under supervision of the Chief, System Planning, assists with the engineering studies, hydraulic analysis, and other tasks necessary to support operation of and long-range planning for Fairfax Water's transmission and distribution facilities.

Under supervision of the Chief, System Planning, assists with the engineering studies, hydraulic analysis, and other tasks necessary to support operation of and long-range planning for Fairfax Water's transmission and distribution facilities.
Examples of Duties
- Conducting preliminary engineering studies and hydraulic analysis to establish the need, feasibility, function, and priority of various system improvements such as pumping stations, storage facilities, or transmission mains.
- Supporting update and maintenance of Fairfax Water's Water system hydraulic model, including:
- Performing updates from Fairfax Water's enterprise GIS using automated methods.
- Validating model performance against historical SCADA information.
- Performing detailed studies and analysis aimed at providing a justification for capital improvements to existing and future water supply facilities, including evaluation of alternative scenarios.
- Preparing cost and justification information for Fairfax Water's Capital Improvement Program.
- Supporting update and maintenance of Fairfax Water's System Master Plan.
- Reviewing design documents to include plans, specifications, project schedules, expenses, and reports on assigned projects.
- Supporting design activities with various consulting engineering firms.
- Furnishing consultants with hydraulic system information as needed.
- Assisting Short Range Planning with fire flow analysis and review of site development plans.
- Identification of opportunities to coordinate Fairfax Water system improvements with planned highway or other construction projects.
- Updating Fairfax Water's demand projections, including obtaining population information, trending historic water use, and evaluating various approaches to developing demand projections.
- Providing information to develop operating guidelines to support optimization of Fairfax Water's transmission and distribution system.
- Preparing and updating project tracking spreadsheets, databases, and schedules.
- Attending meetings, conferences, and preparing reports.
- Performing other duties as assigned or required.
Typical Qualifications
- Graduation from a four year college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Environmental or Infrastructure Engineering or related field and a minimum of three years progressively responsible experience in the planning and design of public water supply facilities, or any equivalent combination of education, experience and knowledge.
- Possession of an F.E. (Fundamental of Engineering) certificate is preferred.
- Considerable knowledge of the theory and practices of civil engineering relating to the design and construction of public water supply facilities.
- Considerable knowledge of hydraulics, GIS, and computer modeling techniques.
- Considerable working knowledge of hydraulic modeling software for water utility design, including but not limited to the following software packages:
- Bently WaterCAD, Bently WaterGEMS, Innovyze InfoWater, Aquanuity AquaTwin, Autodesk InfoWorks WS, EPANET.
- Ability to write reports, specifications and contract documents.
- Ability to make accurate computations and notes.
- Ability to collect and compile research data.
- Ability to work proficiently in hydraulic analysis.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and good driving record.
- Must pass a controlled substance (drug) test for employment.
