GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Cardio-Thoracic Physician Assistant (CTPA) is an allied member of the Medical Staff that provides direct patient care under the clinical supervision of the Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons. This key-member of the Open Heart Program performs surgical, invasive, and non-invasive procedures in both, the Operating Room and bedside within the Critical Care Nursing Units. Utilizing critical thinking skills, the CTPA adheres to established clinical practice guidelines in performing care to pre- and post-surgical/procedure patients. The CTPA actively participates as a member of the Open Heart Quality Improvement Team and any other defined quality/operational committees as directed. The CTPA communicates patient care and/or safety issues to administrative and clinical leadership as appropriate.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs endoscopic vein harvest and other invasive surgical procedures as directed by surgeon.
Performs clinical assessment and treatment plan on pre- and post-surgical patients in the critical care setting.
Adheres to medical staff rules in performing daily rounds, prescribing therapy, and entering orders and notes into patient medical record.
Collaborate with Medical Staff, Nursing, Pharmacy, and other allied health providers.
Appropriately prioritize when performing daily patient rounding in collaboration with Nursing and supervising physicians.
Adhere to The Joint Commission standards and Hospital policies in performing medication reconciliation, transfer / discharge orders and aseptic / sterile technique.
Actively participate in direct patient care during cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other emergencies as needed or requested by healthcare team members.
Adhere to Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ standards when prescribing and documenting in cardiac surgery patients’ medical records.
Demonstrate a professional and personable appearance when communication to patients, family- members and colleagues at all times.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS PREFERRED:
Skilled in critical care medicine and operating room procedures
Advanced knowledge in cardiac rhythm management and hemodynamics
Wide breadth of knowledge in cardiopulmonary pharmaceuticals and IV management
Advanced knowledge of IABP, Impella and other therapeutic devices
Skilled in endoscopic vein harvest technique in surgical setting
Advanced knowledge of Ventricular Assist Devices
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner Program
Master of Science in Healthcare related discipline
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
First Assist experience in Open Heart surgical procedures
Cardiovascular experience
Surgical experience
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:
Current license as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner with Kansas Board of Healing Arts or Nursing
Physician Assistant – Certified (PA-C) or Nurse Practitioner – Certified (APRN-C)
Current certification in ACLS with the American Heart Association.
