Job Summary:
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) works directly under the supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist to provide therapeutic interventions and assist patients in their rehabilitation journey. PTAs play a critical role in helping individuals recover from injuries, surgeries, or chronic conditions by improving mobility, reducing pain, and enhancing overall physical function. PTAs implement treatment plans, educate patients on exercises, and contribute to the overall patient care process.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with Patient Care: Implement physical therapy treatment plans designed by the physical therapist, including exercises, manual therapy, and modalities like heat, cold, and electrical stimulation.
- Monitor and Document Patient Progress: Record and track patient progress, report findings, and update treatment plans as directed by the physical therapist.
- Patient Education: Teach patients proper techniques for exercises, stretches, and self-care to improve strength, flexibility, and mobility. Provide ongoing encouragement and motivation.
- Assist with Mobility: Help patients with movement, transfers, and walking aids (e.g., crutches, walkers, wheelchairs) to enhance functional mobility.
- Maintain Equipment and Therapy Areas: Ensure the therapy environment is safe and clean. Set up and clean therapy equipment before and after each session.
- Collaborate with Physical Therapists and Healthcare Team: Work closely with physical therapists to discuss patient progress, adjustments to treatment plans, and any changes in the patient’s condition. Communicate effectively with other healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and occupational therapists.
- Provide Emotional Support: Offer compassion and emotional encouragement to patients, particularly those dealing with long-term recovery or chronic pain.
- Adhere to Compliance and Safety Standards: Follow all healthcare regulations, safety protocols, and patient privacy laws (e.g., HIPAA) while delivering care.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Associate’s degree in Physical Therapist Assisting from an accredited program.
- Licensing: Valid state licensure or certification as required.
- Experience: Previous experience in a healthcare or rehabilitation setting preferred but not required.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift, carry, and assist with patient movement. Ability to stand, bend, and walk for extended periods.
- Skills: Strong communication skills, ability to work well in a team, empathy, and strong organizational skills.
