Summary:
This position is in the Rhode Island Hospital Pharmacy Retail location. Under the supervision of a Pharmacist and direction of the Pharmacy Technician Group Leader the Pharmacy Technician Specialist rotates to all applicable work assignments and work shifts of pharmacy services including pharmacy retail as business need dictates and contingent upon individual demonstrated competency of necessary skills and knowledge for the respective area. Utilizes experience-based knowledge to perform more advanced technical functions in preparing formulating and packaging medication and pharmaceutical supplies. Assists the Pharmacy Technician Group leader in assigned areas of the hospital or retail pharmacy to coordinate activities of Pharmacy Technicians and support personnel in keeping with the scope of services provided and with consideration to the age of the patients/customers being served. Interacts professionally as needed with patients/customers physicians and their support personnel to obtain accurate information including insurance information needed to process customer/patient prescriptions and process accurate payment transactions. Accesses inputs and retrieves necessary information using multiple pharmacy system applications. Assists pharmacy technician as workload or need arises and performs other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities: Exhibits a friendly pleasant and helpful nature demonstrating a strong customer service orientation when interacting with customers/patients physicians and support personnel. Responds to questions relative to cost and availability of medication and pharmaceutical supplies. Informs customers/patients physicians and their support personnel of wait times and any issues regarding drug availability including advising on the refill authorization process for expired prescription orders. Protects and maintains customer/patient confidentiality while collecting customer/patient personal information necessary for filling prescriptions such as name address date of birth and insurance information. Enters pertinent customer/patient data into appropriate pharmacy systems in order to ensure accurate charging for services and processing of insurance billing/payment as well as customer/patient co-pay information. Collects and processes payment for customer/patient transactions. Assists patients/customers in resolving identified problems. Refers customers/patients questions concerning medications and drug interactions to the attending Pharmacist. Determines patient needs and as appropriate facilitates referral to retail pharmacy and/or case management. Promotes the various services provided including delivery of prescriptions and/or medical equipment to discharged patient�s bedside. Assumes responsibility for assigned areas of the pharmacy including intravenous chemotherapy preparation controlled substance inventory management medication purchasing operating room medication inventory maintenance payroll processing hospital and pharmacy quality assurance auditing as well as departmental and patient/customer medication charging. Assists the Pharmacy Technician Group Leader in coordination of the activities and workflow of Pharmacy Technicians and support personnel. Utilizes experience-based knowledge in order to function more independently than a Pharmacy Technician in preparing formulating and packaging medications including chemotherapy and controlled substances and other pharmaceutical supplies under the immediate supervision of a pharmacist. Assumes responsibility for equipment set-up calibration and operation of pharmacy equipment including the electronic drug dispensing system (EDDS; i.e. Omnicell Pyxis) and formulations technology. Coordinates quality assurance activities for assigned areas of the hospital and/retail pharmacy as well as in all areas of the hospital when assigned to Quality Assurance. Ensures medication supply areas are neat and orderly and medications are stored under proper conditions for light temperature and sanitation. Participates in quality assessment and improvement activities and medication safety initiatives of the pharmacy and the hospital. Utilizes approved process for reporting actual prevented and near miss medication errors. Provides resource assistance and guidance to Pharmacy Technicians� and support personnel in performing their normal job duties. Provides input into the evaluation of job performance for Pharmacy Technician and support personnel. Rotates to all applicable work assignments and work shifts of Pharmacy Services including pharmacy retail as business need dictates and contingent upon individual demonstrated competency of necessary skills and knowledge for the respective area. Acknowledges and demonstrates professionalism for self and others. Assists pharmacy technician as workload or need arises and performs other duties as assigned including but not limited to automated dispensing cabinet medication refill or maintenance pharmacy compounding (e.g. sterile non-sterile topical oral and IV) medication inventory management and delivery etc.
Other information: EXPERIENCE & BASIC KNOWLEDGE: High school graduate or equivalent degree. Completion of one to two years of college preferred. Maintains current unrestricted Rhode Island Pharmacy Technician licensure. Maintains and holds current National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) or has a minimum of one year pharmacy technician work experience and achieves and maintains certification within 7 months of hire. Must possess solid computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite as well as email and calendar applications. Must be comfortable in using internet web applications and multiple pharmacy system applications. Strong customer service presence and verbal and written communication skills are necessary to interact with customers/patients physicians and ancillary support staff. Work is exact and requires the ability to pay attention to detail to avoid serious error in medication dispensing and payment transactions. Must be able to multi-task and reprioritize as needed while maintaining accuracy and service standards.
