Overview
Perform essential law enforcement and community service functions to help the department meet its mission to protect life and property, to provide the campus community with a peaceful and safe environment. This is a part-time position consisting of evening and weekend hours.
Responsibilities
* Enforce all state, local and university laws, ordinances, regulations, and perform community service activities.
* Assist in the judicial process by giving testimony.
* Keep the University community informed through appropriate public relations activities.
* Develop a relationship of trust by becoming personally acquainted with members of the community.
* Ensure a prompt response and a proper disposition to all calls for service.
* Prepare quality reports when appropriate.
* Ensure that crimes are properly investigated and that evidence is properly gathered, reported, and preserved.
* Promote the general safety of persons, property, and equipment through a proper balance of vehicle, foot, and bicycle patrol.
* Facilitate the safe and smooth flow of traffic by directing traffic and enforcing traffic laws through citations and verbal warnings.
* Foster good interdepartmental relations by cooperating with other law enforcement agencies in information exchange.
* Maintain a thorough knowledge of laws, University regulations, and police operations.
* Maintain a minimum of 40 hours of law enforcement training.
* Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
* Must be a law enforcement officer (LEO) certified or certifiable upon hiring (this means you must have successfully completed a police academy)
* Utah POST Certified
* Ability to work a variable schedule (days, nights, weekends, holidays, special events)
* Will be required to pass a physical fitness test, background check, written test and oral interview.
* Ability to use good judgment and to problem solve
* Capacity for empathy and compassion
* Capacity for multi-tasking
* Ability to demonstrate courage and to take responsibility
* Ability to be resourceful and show initiative
* Demonstrated assertiveness
* Possess and demonstrate integrity
* Capacity for engaging in teamwork and the ability to collaborate
* Have or obtain Utah Driver License within 60 days of hire
Preferred Qualifications
* Previous law enforcement experience
* Radar and Intoxilyzer certification
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
* Experience handling sensitive and confidential information
* Knowledge of communication equipment and campus facilities
* Skill in the use of personal computer and related software application
* Skill in handling complaints and problems
* Ability to organize information and prioritize tasks effectively
* Ability to communicate effectively orally, electronically and in writing
* Ability to maintain confidentiality
