Job Summary:
The Foot Orthotic Technician (F/O Technician) is responsible for fabricating quality custom foot orthotics according to lab orders provided by podiatrists, orthopedic specialists, and other healthcare professionals. They are primarily involved in the preparation, molding, and finishing stages of orthotic production, utilizing both traditional and digital techniques to ensure the highest quality products for our clients. They follow lab order criteria, practitioner specifications and established timetables as part of the workflow. They effectively and safely utilize systems, tools, materials, and software to create orthotics that meet the specific needs of patients, ensuring proper fit, function, and comfort.
Fabrication Duties/Responsibilities:
- Utilize advanced scanning technology to capture accurate dimensions and shapes of crush boxes for plaster cast patients for orthotic molding.
- Prepare and melt wax to form blanks that serve as the basis for the orthotics.
- Conduct digital foot orthotic modification employing specialized software to adjust and customize orthotic designs according to client needs.
- Use basic familiarity of CNC machinery to understand its role in the production process, without the need for programming skills.
- Expertly mold and shape foam over machined positives to create the primary form of the orthotics.
- Perform meticulous sanding and finishing processes to ensure the orthotics are comfortable and meet quality standards.
- Interpretate lab orders accurately to understand the requirements for each foot orthotic.
- Accurately select appropriate materials such as foam, plastics, and composite materials based on lab order specifications as required in the process from machining to finishing.
- Utilize machinery, tools, and techniques to fabricate custom foot orthotics, including shaping, cutting, and molding materials to achieve desired specifications.
- Ensure that all orthotics meet quality standards and specifications, including proper fit, function, and durability.
- Use ARCAD software in the design, creation, and adjustment of quality orthotics.
- Maintain inventory of items used during fabrication process.
- Effectively manage the workflow through efficient work practices, time management and communication of job status.
- Document and maintain accurate records of all orders, including lab order details, materials used, and any modifications made during fabrication.
- Maintain a clean and orderly workspace.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify and suggest improvements to processes to promote efficiency and productivity.
- Participates in continuing education to be proficient in fabricating techniques and material properties.
- Stay informed about advancements in foot orthotic technology, materials, and fabrication techniques to continuously improve skills and knowledge.
Safety Awareness
- Adheres to Yanke Bionics safety guidelines and training requirements and other safety and governmental regulations.
- Perform routine maintenance on machinery and equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety.
- Use training and appropriate judgement regarding the use of tools, chemicals, and equipment for safe operations and of chemicals.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Comfortable using hand/power tools and standard shop equipment.
- Familiar with lamination techniques, mold preparation, and working with thermoplastics, resins, metal, leather, and plaster.
- Basic understanding of medical terminology.
- Strong communication skills.
- Basic Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Ability to multitask and shift priorities.
- Technically proficient in using machinery, hand tools, and equipment commonly used in orthotic fabrication. Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
- Attention to detail and precision to ensure accurate fabrication of custom orthotics according to lab order requirements.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Certified Orthotic Technician (CTP) a plus.
Essential Functions/Physical Demands:
- Capable of lifting loads up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
- Mechanical ability and hand-eye coordination to use laboratory tools safely and effectively.
- Ability to communicate (read, write, speak) in English.
- Problem analysis and problem resolution at both a strategic and functional level.
- Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities.
- Basic math skills
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- The role may require standing for extended periods and performing tasks that involve manual dexterity and attention to detail.
- Exposure to varying temperatures and distractions according to work application at the time
