About the Job
Opto-Mechanical Engineer San Diego, CA or Huntsville, AL 1 Opening
Design, develop, analyze, document, and support testing of robust, precision opto-mechanical assemblies using precision mechanism, adhesive bonding, shimming, kinematics, and thermal control. Analyze loads and environmental factors on the optical/mechanical system performance. Work with our team to make sure all requirements are met (including manufacturability, cost, and schedule). Understand the complete mechanical design from overall system level to individual piece parts. Perform and provide optical/mechanical analysis of designs (including tolerance and stackups), facilitating Monte Carlo analysis to verify the design's capability across manufacturing tolerances and operational conditions. Build prototypes, analyze failures, and transition successful prototypes into production. Work with manufacturing engineering to break down large, complex assemblies into logical subassemblies and sub-processes based on manufacturing capabilities, cost, and product requirements. Develop agreed-upon project schedules and priorities with the project and engineering management leads and schedule projects/resources to meet deadlines. Produce regular progress reports and documentation with project Engineering Manager / Technical Lead. Provide technical leadership to less experienced engineers and technicians and contribute to the success of a collaborative team. Identify and communicate any engineering constraints/issues to project Engineering Manager / Technical Lead. Collaborate with engineering staff and other personnel to identify and resolve problems with the design or implementation. Produce mechanical engineering drawings and layouts for peer reviews, vendors, and customer evaluations. Attend regular project and design reviews and provide feedback on timings and completion of work to the projects team. Identify and highlight areas where additional support may be required to ensure timely and accurate completion of work. Generate and/or process engineering change orders (ECO's) as required.
