Ophthalmic Assistant - Surgery Center

Overview:
Greets patients and escorts them to and from the examining rooms. Obtains ocular, medical and family history; assists doctor during exam or minor surgery as well as with any additional testing. Qualifications:
- Experience: Must have good telephone and communication skills.
- Other: Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments, procedures and office procedures for ophthalmology and optometry.
- Must be able to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and policies.
- Must be able to communicate clearly and establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, staff and the public.
- Equipment Used: Must be able to operate equipment to perform: VFA, A Scans, PAM, BAT, color vision testing, pupil evaluation, Amsler grid, automated keratometry, and corneal topography.
- Preferred Education: Knowledge of ophthalmology office procedures preferred. General medical knowledge of anatomy, physiology, systemic and ocular diseases preferred.
- Experience with administration of eye drops, ointments and irrigating solutions, and pharmacology of drugs used in dilation preferred.
- Experience: Prefer a minimum of one year previous work experience.
- Responsibilities
- Prepares examination rooms and checks daily patient schedule.Greets patients and escorts patients to the examining rooms.Obtains accurate and concise patient history: ocular, medical, family history, past medical history and past ocular history.Measures visual acuity (near, far and pinhole) and tests glare factor with BAT.Reads glasses - understands principles of sphere, cylinder and prism.Neutralizes patients lenses.Tests color vision, Amsler grid and depth perception when warranted.Instills ocular medication; applies ocular dressings.Instructs patients concerning medicines, tests and surgical procedures.Sets up, preps for and assists with surgical procedures performed in the office.Assists with and/or performs additional testing ordered by the doctor.Takes dictation and keeps accurate records.Cleans exam rooms, sterilizes instruments; stocks supplies on a weekly basis.Performs A Scans, pulse and blood pressure procedures on pre-op patients.Performs hand held tonometry, visual field, PAM.Performs extra ocular motility, checks pupils and confrontation field.Screens phone messages, triages emergency calls and returns patient calls.Assists optometrists with contact lens insertion, removal, cleaning, ordering and returning.Assists front desk area for coverage.GENERAL DUTIES:20.1 Performs additional duties as assigned.20.2 Observes universal precautions consistently.20.3 Wears proper personal protective equipment when appropriate.20.4 Wears clothing and Health System badge consistent with dress code, and attends to personal hygiene to maintain a clean, well-groomed appearance.20.5 Meets Health System attendance standards.
