Operations Manager (Cannabis, Concentrate infused, CPG)
Role Overview:
The Operations Manager for Cannabis and Concentrate infused products is responsible for overseeing all production, manufacturing, and operational aspects of the business, ensuring compliance with industry regulations, efficient use of resources, and alignment with company goals. This position will focus heavily on Lean Manufacturing practices to optimize production efficiency while maintaining the highest standards of quality control and regulatory compliance within the cannabis and CPG sectors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Production & Process Management (Cannabis and Concentrate infused products):
- Oversee the full production cycle, from raw materials through processing, packaging, and distribution of cannabis and concentrate infused products.
- Ensure compliance with all state and federal cannabis regulations (e.g., tracking, labeling, testing).
- Optimize extraction processes, ensuring consistency and quality of cannabis concentrate infused (e.g., Prerolls, Donuts, Vapes).
- Implement and monitor standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all production stages, ensuring product quality and safety.
- Lean Manufacturing Implementation:
- Lead Lean Manufacturing initiatives to reduce waste, improve workflows, and increase overall productivity.
- Implement 5S, Kaizen, and continuous improvement methodologies to streamline operations.
- Identify bottlenecks in production and propose innovative solutions to enhance throughput and efficiency.
- Monitor and control operational costs, looking for opportunities to reduce expenses through lean practices and process improvements.
- Compliance & Quality Control:
- Ensure all operations meet regulatory requirements for cannabis products, including tracking, testing, packaging, and labeling according to state and federal laws.
- Manage compliance with health and safety standards, including OSHA and any local cannabis regulations.
- Establish and maintain quality assurance processes, ensuring all cannabis products meet or exceed quality standards.
- Conduct audits and quality checks on processes and products and implement corrective actions when necessary.
- CPG Expertise:
- Oversee the packaging and distribution of cannabis products as a CPG, ensuring efficient, scalable operations.
- Collaborate with marketing, sales, and product development teams to ensure product packaging meets market demands and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor inventory levels and implement demand planning strategies to ensure consistent supply while minimizing overstock.
- Manage relationships with suppliers, ensuring consistent quality and availability of packaging materials and raw inputs.
- Team Leadership & Development:
- Lead and develop the operations team, including production staff, supervisors, and quality control personnel.
- Conduct training on Lean principles, compliance, and SOPs to maintain a high-performance culture focused on continuous improvement.
- Provide feedback, coaching, and development opportunities for team members to foster a culture of accountability and growth.
- Supply Chain & Inventory Management:
- Oversee inventory management, including raw materials, finished products, and packaging supplies, ensuring optimal stock levels to meet production demands.
- Implement supply chain strategies to minimize lead times, reduce waste, and manage logistics.
- Work closely with vendors and suppliers to ensure timely deliveries, quality assurance, and cost efficiencies.
- Utilize ERP or MRP systems to manage production schedules and inventory in real-time.
- Data-Driven Operations & Reporting:
- Use data analytics to monitor production KPIs such as cycle times, yield rates, production output, and waste reduction.
- Track and analyze operational metrics to ensure consistent improvement in efficiency, quality, and cost management.
- Prepare and present reports on operational performance to the executive team, identifying trends and areas for optimization.
- Sustainability Initiatives:
- Implement environmentally sustainable practices in production, packaging, and waste management.
- Explore and integrate energy-efficient technologies and materials, contributing to the company's sustainability goals.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
- Production efficiency (cycle time, throughput, yield rates)
- Lean process adoption (reduction in waste, production cost savings)
- Compliance (audit scores, number of violations or incidents)
- Product quality (failure rates, customer feedback)
- Team productivity (output per worker, training effectiveness)
- Inventory accuracy (on-time delivery rates, inventory turnover)
Qualifications:
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Operations Management, Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, or related field.
- Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma certification preferred.
- Knowledge of cannabis extraction and processing techniques (preferred but not required).
- Experience:
- 5+ years of operations management experience in a regulated industry such as cannabis, CPG, food production, or pharmaceuticals.
- Experience working with concentrates and terp mixing for flavors and managing the production of cannabis-based products.
- Proven track record of implementing Lean Manufacturing techniques to optimize production processes.
- Strong understanding of cannabis regulatory frameworks and quality control standards.
- Experience with ERP systems and production management software.
Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of cannabis production, including extraction methods (e.g., CO2, ethanol), post-processing, and concentrate infused product development.
- Expertise in Lean Manufacturing, including tools like 5SKaizen, and Six Sigma to drive continuous improvement.
- Familiarity with CPG packaging requirements, shelf-life management, and product compliance in a consumer-focused industry.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify process improvements and solve operational challenges.
- Ability to lead and develop teams, ensuring efficient collaboration and communication across departments.
- Proficiency in inventory management, demand forecasting, and supply chain optimization
