New England Cancer Specialists (NECS) is growing! We are currently seeking a 40 hr./5-day Experienced Oncology Nurse in our Portsmouth Clinic. This position will work with physician teams who see a wide variety of Cancers and Blood Disorders in their practice. Current and former NECS employees are not eligible for this bonus.
NECS Nurse Navigators use oncology clinical knowledge to offer individualized care to patients, families, and caregivers to help navigate along the health care continuum. The Nurse Navigator provides nursing assessments and the triage of patient care needs over the phone and in the office. Offering advice and counsel to patients as well as advising physicians of patient needs and recommended interventions. The Nurse Navigator works collaboratively with physicians, APP’s RN peers, Patient Care Coordinators, and other clinical and non-clinical personal within and outside the practice.
NECS is a private medical practice composed of 18 Oncologists and hematologists serving the region from 5 different locations in Maine and New Hampshire. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Point of contact for referring physicians, patients, and caregivers to assist with patient scheduling and coordination of care.
- Assist physicians; conduct patient assessments.
- Receive patient telephone calls and intervene appropriately for that patient’s specific needs promptly. Alert physician as needed to patient needs that require physician intervention.
- Follow up with patients as needed by telephone, to ensure compliance with treatment guidelines and to evaluate changing or uncertain clinical situations.
- Draw blood from ports, central lines, and peripheral IV access. Perform other procedures as needed.
- Ensures follow-up appointments and tests/procedures are scheduled for patients.
- Maintain patient care standards and assures that patient care functions, such as assessment, treatment, and documentation are completed safely and effectively.
- Maintain open and effective communication with all physicians, employees, and vendors.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team conferences, in-services and continuing education programs, national and regional professional organizations, and community-sponsored programs specific to Oncology and Hematology.
- Incorporates evidence-based research into clinical practice and provide recommendations on practice clinical policies and processes to practice Directors
- Coordinate patient care responsibilities within the scope of the practice for licensed and unlicensed health care providers.
- Demonstrates respect for the life, dignity, and rights of all persons.
Travel: Very Minimal.
Weekends: Occasional; this position will participate with other nurses navigators in the weekend urgent care coverage rotation. 4 per year.

Required Experience:
- Licensed Nurse within the state of New Hampshire or a Compact License with the State of Maine is required.
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
- OCN Certification Preferred
- Two years of Hematology/Chemotherapy/Oncology nursing experience preferred
- ONS Chemotherapy & Bio-therapy Certification required or have the ability to get certification within one year of employment.
- Two - Five years plus nursing professional experience required.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and staff
- Must be detail-oriented, strong follow-up skills, and able to manage multiple priorities.
