Job Summary
The Officer / Engineer Field Technology is responsible for developing and adapting technological advances for inspection of railroad infrastructure. The position maintains aspects of current technology deployments and carries out data analysis of inspection as well as operational performance. The incumbent ensures the accurate interpretation of field conditions including remediation of safety-critical exceptions. Furthermore, the position is accountable for management of supplier performance and implementing project deliveries.
Main Responsibilities
Car Operations and Maintenance
· Develop, maintain, and execute processes and procedures that will bring the technology into operational status
· Coordinate with internal and external Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to perform maintenance and repair activities
· Perform diagnostics and minor maintenance on technology systems, rail car components and car operational components (e.g., generator and power distribution systems)
· Coordinate with internal and external parties for platform access, material availability, and to minimize impact to testing operations
· Coordinate and communicate regularly with Operations to ensure technology inspections
Data Analysis and Validation
· Perform data analysis of systems to ensure that products perform as required
· Validate back-office data for accuracy prior to sending to field
· Verify field verifications behind testing systems, track findings, and present to internal and external employees for continuous improvement
Technology Oversight
· Handle internal and external project resources to ensure proper interpretation of business requirements, including providing field context and adherence to critical timelines, milestones, and deliverables
· Develop Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and track ongoing performance
· Develop reports and recommendations for senior leadership to ensure technology acceptance
Program Oversight and Development
· Perform engineering analysis of proposed autonomous test systems to ensure safe and reliable operations in the railroad environment
· Review CN’s specifications and standards to ensure compliance
· Modify and develop additional rules, specifications, and standards to ensure that the test system is effective
· Supervise and approve the build and construction process to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and contract
Working Conditions
The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environment in various types of weather conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The incumbent must be available to work shifts and weekends when necessary. The role requires occasional travel (25%) to Canada and the United States (U.S.).
Requirements
Experience
Engineering
· Minimum 3 years of engineering field experience
o Experience with railroad inspection systems, operations and functions*
o Experience with diesel engines, power distribution systems, rail car maintenance, or mechatronics*
o Experience with technology research and development*
o Experience with data analysis*

Education/Certification/Designation
· Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
· Professional Engineering Designation (P.Eng.)*
