Job DescriptionUnder general supervision, serves as a staff consultant on matters of nutrition; plans, organizes and coordinates the nutrition services of various inpatient, outpatient and community health programs; provides consultation directly to individuals or families with nutrition problems. The 2846 Nutritionist essential duties include:
- Plans, organizes, and coordinates community-based nutrition programs, such as outpatient and community setting (e.g., WIC, and community clinics). This includes assessing the nutritional needs of the target population, identifying service gaps, and evaluating both clinical and community-based nutritional needs to ensure effective program delivery and improved health outcomes.
- Develops, implements, and leads Policy, System and Environmental (PSE) activities and projects with an emphasis on nutrition-related activities.
- Provides appropriate medical nutrition therapy (nutrition assessment, nutrition diagnosis, nutrition intervention and evaluating clinical outcomes) to individuals and their caregivers as indicated, to successfully cope with nutrition related conditions and concerns.
- Collaborates and communicates with the multidisciplinary health-care team to provide specialized nutrition care that is integrated with the overall goals of care for patients at risk for nutrition problems.
- Serves as consultant to the staff of the department and/or community/city agencies partners on the technical and practical aspects of the nutritional programs and activities.
- Develops, reviews and recommends nutrition educational materials - Creates and updates nutrition education materials, evaluates their effectiveness, and adapts content for different languages and cultures to improve public nutrition knowledge.
- Develops standard workflow and conducts nutrition education programs and medical nutrition therapy based on job setting. Participates in departmental activities, projects, including performance improvement projects.
- Evaluate nutrition programs, policies, or services. Monitoring and Evaluation: Track and analyze the outcomes of nutrition programs and interventions, using data to assess the effectiveness and make recommendations for future improvements.
- Maintains professional competence and continuing education per Commission of Dietetic Registration.
- Provides guidance, support, and knowledge sharing to help fellow nutritionists and colleagues.
- Trains and supervises dietetic interns, students, staff, volunteers as needed.
- Leads and contributes to nutrition-related projects aimed at addressing health disparities, ensuring that operational strategies and decisions are guided by an equity lens to promote inclusive and effective outcomes.
- Establish and collaborate with diverse community partners for program recruitment, participation, retention or expansion.
- Develop and update nutrition-related surveys and other assessment tools. Conduct qualitative and/or qualitative analyses of nutrition data. Summarize data in the form of charts, tables, graphs. Identify, utilize, and assess reputable sources of current nutrition guidelines, policies, and data sources.
- Assigns team member tasks based on their skills and scope of practice, coordinates training to ensure staff competence, and sets clear performance expectations while providing constructive feedback for improvement.
The 2846 Nutritionist performs other related duties as assigned/required.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications (Required)
- EDUCATION: Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, with major course work in nutrition; AND
- EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of experience providing medical nutrition therapy in a public health or community health setting; AND
- CERTIFICATION: Current valid registration as a Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration; AND
- LICENSE: Possession of a valid California driver’s license. (See Note 1)
SUBSTITUTION: Possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Nutrition or a related field may be substituted for the required experience.
Note:
- Out-of-state driver’s license holders who meet the rest of the minimum qualifications may proceed to the next step in the recruitment process. However, candidates placed on the eligible list will not be considered available for hire until they obtain a valid California driver’s license.
One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40- hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Assessment Component
Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in Supplemental Questionnaire exam that is designed to measure the knowledge, skills, and abilities in job related areas which may include but not be limited to:
Training and Experience Questionnaire (Weight: 100%)
Candidates must achieve a passing score on the Training and Experience questionnaire in order to continue in the selection process and will be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score.
Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
Certification
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of the List.
