About the Job
The Microorganism Inventory Specialist is primarily focused on the maintenance of an inventory system for all microorganisms used in routine testing at Nelson Labs " Bozeman. They will maintain a microorganism database and acquire necessary microorganisms from approved suppliers and distribute them internally for required protocols. They work closely with Laboratory Operations Managers, Department Scientists, and the Safety Specialists to ensure availability and safety of microorganisms used for testing. Additionally, they are accountable for regulatory compliance and policy & procedural compliance.
Essential Duties:
¢ Initiates activities that provide for cost effective use of all microorganisms (MO) used in the business of the Laboratory.
¢ Responsible for/assists in "build out" of LIMS component of MO management.
¢ Works with Safety committee to assess risks of new proposed organisms.
¢ Assists the Direct supervisor in developing annual supply and expense budget, staying within the limit established for utilization, and reporting to the Direct supervisor any variations from budget.
¢ Collaborates in the evaluation of new and/or improved MOs, making recommendations to the Direct supervisor regarding safety, pathogenicity. Approval required prior to purchasing all new Mos.
¢ Acts as a resource for laboratory staff regarding procurement of MOs.
¢ Ensures that the laboratory staff are aware of procedures that provide for efficient ordering, receiving, storage and distribution of all MOs.
¢ Maintains an awareness of current trends in protocol development and the impact on direct and indirect laboratory activities and the laboratory budget.
¢ Maintains adequate stocks of MOs while allowing for no inventory waste, reagent, or product due to shelf storage expiration.
¢ Maintains an efficient system of inventory control as to ensure proper levels of MOs in the laboratory for normal laboratory operations.
¢ Is responsible, under the direction of the Direct supervisor for the ordering, receiving, storage and distribution of all laboratory MOs.
¢ Monitors utilization of all MOs and adjusts stock levels respectively
¢ Performs annual & quarterly physical inventory of all MOs.
¢ When directed, shall assist the Direct supervisor in the negotiation process for obtaining best pricing on inventory items and shall maintain records related to the budget of the inventory items and shall maintain records related to the budget of the inventory items in spread sheet format allowing for measurement of variances in the utilization of inventory items. Under the direction and guidance of the direct supervisor will establish and maintain computer database of all laboratory inventory and MOs.
¢ Evaluates and reports to the Direct supervisor all vendors communicating areas of concern.
¢ Distributes information regarding the availability of MOs and other pertinent information to all laboratory staff and clients.
¢ Communicates routinely with the Direct supervisor and staff the status of all orders.
¢ Responsible for maintaining records of service contracts, leases, and utilities.

Work Environment:
¢ This job operates in a professional office and laboratory environment.
¢ This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, keyboards, computer mouse, telephones, photocopiers, projectors, and file cabinets.
¢ Typically works in an office environment but may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside of the typical office setting.
¢ This job will also operate in a laboratory environment and clean-room environment " that requires PPE and possible donning of respirators, clean room attire.
Physical requirements:
¢ Must be able to move/traverse 75% of the day and remain in a stationary sitting/standing position at a desk while using a computer, keyboard, computer mouse and phone
¢ Wear personal protective equipment such as hoods, lab coats, safety glasses, goggles, gloves, facemasks, shoe coverings, and respiratory equipment as applicable.
¢ This position is not required to move or lift items greater than 45lbs.
