Examines and performs testing on blood, bodily fluids, tissue and other specimens to aid in diagnosis; operates complex instruments to test biological specimens; evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis; follows standard procedures to perform routine, timed and STAT moderate and complex laboratory tests; recognizes deviation from expected results; maintains instruments by performing maintenance procedures and calibration; operates and utilizes necessary programs on the Laboratory Information System (LIS), Hospital Information System (HIS), or PC; analyzes quality control data, evaluating the results and taking appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision; documents results or actions in writing and by computer; reports all critical values following laboratory protocol; draws blood specimens from patients; works as a generalist to include Blood Bank and Flow Cytometry; monitors the work pending log of designated section and documents action taken; maintains a neat and efficient work area by cleaning bench tops, equipment/instruments and replenishing supplies in a timely manner; teaches instrument operation or procedures to Clinical Laboratory Science students or new employees as assigned; follows procedures for hazardous waste management; documents customer complaints, testing or reporting errors and presents to supervisor for corrective action; participates in continuing education activities; participates in proficiency testing programs; adheres to hospital policies and to current Infection Control and Safety Standards; utilizes proper body mechanics when moving, positioning, and transferring patients with or without assistance when needed for patient safety and when moving equipment/supplies necessary to perform essential functions; communicates and uses appropriate customer relations skills with physicians, patients, families, and healthcare team in person and via the telephone; responds to overhead pages; participates on committees as assigned; participates in Performance Improvement activities as assigned; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; related duties as required.
Bachelor’s degree with major course work in Medical Technology from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and registry eligible with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist.
