About the Job
The Medical Assistant Extern performs clinical and clerical duties under the supervision and guidance of a Medical Assistant-Certified, Clinic Manager, and/or Licensed Medical Professional. Performs delegated administrative and patient care tasks necessary for the care of the patient. The Medical Assistant Extern can only be delegated tasks for which they have had successful clinical training through their respective educational institutions and for which they have received validation.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assists with routine patient care and treatment of patients as delegated by a Licensed Medical Professional or Preceptor and under the direct supervision of the RN/LPN including, but not limited to vital signs, data entry in the electronic medical record to include height and weight, intake questionnaires, etc. cleaning equipment, sitter responsibilities and assisting in treatments/procedures.
- Performs point of care related skills including preparing specimens for transport to reference labs, after demonstrated competency in program and through SCH.
- Performs clinical procedures as permitted and as assigned by Clinic Manager.
- Addresses learning needs of the patient/family; plans, provides, evaluates & documents patient/family education.
- Utilizes St. Claire resources and equipment for patient care efficiently.
- Assures that clinical areas are in order for medical staff to provide patient care.
- Maintains and communicates accurate provider schedules and patient appointments according to established policy.
- Manages medical records according to established policies and procedures.
- Participates in the clinic patient registration and check-out process.
- Uses proper telephone technique including completing telephone message forms and appropriate documentation.
- Cooperates with others in the clinic in completing tasks according to work routine so that all functions are completed prior to the close of the workday.
- Recognizes and practices within scope of medical assisting practice and competency levels and relays any questions, concerns or situations requiring follow-up or attention to a Licensed Medical Professional, Clinic Manager or Preceptor and seeks assistance when necessary.
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent. Actively enrolled in a Certified Medical Assistant program.
Experience:
Successful completion of first semester of Medical Assisting program
Licensure/Certification:
None.
