Job DescriptionAs a Consultant, serve as an Experienced Engineer to develop technical solutions for Chassis Equipment function areas. Have operational responsibility for a component or sub-module delivery as a Function owner resource capacity. Drive the work from an operational perspective. Lead mechanical design engineering activities in a particular area.
Responsibilities
- Take product ownership and engineering responsibility, lead engineering activities in assigned Chassis Equipment function areas.
- Integrate deliveries from other cross functional stakeholders and secure quality and timely delivery of design releases.
- Perform design activities from concept to production phase, support verification & validation activities, and any corrective actions during design maturity stages.
- Work in cross functional teams to prepare, present design review for manufacturing (DFM), aftermarket (DFAM) and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), quality tools related to function responsibility area.
- Work with analyst (FEA, CFD), designers.
- Determine the most optimum approach for actual or potential problems and implement cost effective solutions.
- Coordinate with suppliers/vendors during sourcing, tooling development, quality issues, reviewing & approving supplier requests for engineering change.
- Provide engineering support for prototype/methods/pilot builds at production plant, corrective action for vehicle audit issues.
- Resolve factory, assembly, lab, project, product issues as tracked in Jira Product issue log (PIL) system within area of responsibility.
- Initiate & follow up on engineering work requests for testing (TWR), analysis work request (AWR), engineering shop work request, rapid prototype, to provide guidance and direction on related projects.
- Work with test engineers to support the testing activities, specify test procedure, type of testing required, support prototype procurement.
- Develop plan for accelerated endurance testing of the components/assemblies in area of responsibility.
- Assure compliance with applicable vehicle regulations (FMVSS, FMCSR, EPA, CARB etc) related to area of responsibility.
- Respond to technical reports and provide corrective guidance and recommendations resulting from verification & validation activities.
- Manage, update, issue engineering design changes in product data management system for timely deliveries
- Plan and complete engineering activities within area of function group responsibility.
- Heavy emphasis is placed on level of expertise, knowledge, analysis, accuracy, interaction within department and external organizations.
- Work in a cross-functional mode with stakeholders in other line organizations (Group Trucks Operations/Vehicle Engineering/Powertrain Engineering/Aftermarket Technology/Complete Vehicle) to secure technical solutions for assigned function area within Chassis Equipment.
- Spread knowledge and develop competence within the team.
Qualifications
- Minimum bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (or equivalent).
- Master’s degree is preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in product development in the transportation industry, preferably in truck development.
- Extensive knowledge of Class 8 heavy duty trucks is a plus.
- Knowledge of product development life cycle is a must.
- Basic CAD (CREO-AVP) experience is required.
- Working knowledge of Geometrical Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Product data management experience from previous experience.
- Familiar with finite element analysis (FEA – Structural, Fatigue analysis) and Computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
- Previous product ownership experience is preferred.
- Ability to take initiatives to optimize the systems, processes, and methods.
- Experience working in an Agile environment (such as certified product owner or scrum master) is a plus.
- Previous project management experience is a merit.
- Must have authorization to work in the US.
