The City of Greeley is seeking an experienced Maintenance Mechanic to join our Fleet Services Division in the Public Works Department. The Maintenance Mechanic will report to the Equipment Maintenance Foreman and will perform scheduled preventative maintenance inspections, use diagnostic skills and equipment to inspect, repair and/or rebuild components and sub-components of the City of Greeley vehicles and equipment. The successful candidate will help rebuild and fabricate parts, assist with parts inventory, track, and order parts, keep accurate records, and maintain facility, equipment, and tools. Generally, the Mechanic will work on automobiles, and/or light equipment, heavy duty trucks, construction equipment, specialty vehicles such as Fire trucks, and equipment. The Mechanic will participate in weekly rotations and an on-call schedule consisting of a week at a time.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills:
Minimum Requirements
All Levels:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid, unrestricted driver’s license.
- Vocational or technical training in equipment and vehicle repairs and/or electrical and mechanical systems.
- All employees in this position are required to submit to federally mandated random drug and alcohol screening and will be required to pass a DOT (Department of Transportation) physical and a substance screen prior to employment.
- Must have own tools necessary to complete work for all positions.
OR
- Associates degree in a related field.
- A combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job may be considered by the hiring authority to determine the hiring level.
Mechanic Level I:
- Six (6) months to- two (2) years of working experience.
- Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certified within three (3) years of hire date required.
- Failure to meet certification requirements within the time limit listed could result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.
- Failure to meet certification requirements within the time limit listed could result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.
- EPA 609 certificate.
- Master Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certified within three (3) years of hire date required.
- Failure to meet certification requirements within the time limit listed could result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.
Mechanic Level II:
- Two (2) to three (3) years of working experience.
- Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certified within three (3) years of hire date required.
Mechanic Level III:
- Three (3) to Five (5) years of working experience.
Mechanic Level IV:
- Five (5) + years of working experience.
- EPA 609 certificate.
- Master ASE (A series or H Series or T Series).
- Master Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certified required.
Preferred
- All Levels: Current certification or have the ability to become certified to perform Department of Transportation vehicle inspections within one (1) year of hire date.
- For Levels I – III, some ASE Certification (A Series, H Series, or T Series) preferred.
- Level IV may need to perform lead responsibilities in the absence of the Foreman.

Travel: Approximately 50% of travel is required to all seven fire stations weekly, travel to pick up parts, travel for training in state and out of state.
Essential Functions:
- Diagnoses, repairs, and maintains all types of heavy and/or light duty equipment.
- Performs both routine maintenance of vehicles and major repairs.
- Prepares new vehicles for service including order specifications, installing components or special equipment.
- Provides customer service such as on-site service, after-hours service, and special requests for service.
- Performs required annual tests on vehicles/mechanical equipment and prepares the appropriate documentation.
- Maintains and updates information on warranty repairs.
- Works shifts, weekends, holidays, evenings and/or extended hours as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None. Level IV may perform lead responsibilities in the absence of the Foreman.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
- Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, extreme cold and extreme heat.
- Frequent exposure to excessive noise levels.
- Communication skills enough to convey information to co-workers, customers, and supervisor.
- Vision enough to perform functions such as identifying materials necessary to complete maintenance on equipment, interpreting dials, and repairing equipment.
- Manual dexterity to operate tools, vehicles, and equipment.
- Flexibility enough to bend, twist, and reach out to load and unload equipment, supplies, and tools.
- Ability to move over rough, uneven, and rocky surfaces in performance of maintenance duties.
- Stamina and strength enough to lift and move objects of up to fifty (50) pounds.
