Reporting to the Director of Education and Interpretation, the Assistant Director of Education leads education initiatives of the Museum including the planning, implementation, scheduling, budgeting, and delivery of offerings for K-12 teachers and students, youth and family audiences, and university faculty and students. The Assistant Director of Education independently develops, presents and evaluates training programs, resources, and learning opportunities for teachers as well as K-12 and university students that deepen their understanding of the Museum's collections, especially as they expand upon existing curricula, arts and humanities coursework, and state and national learning frameworks. The Assistant Director of Education will define the strategies to grow the Fowler's K-12 and university gallery visitation as well as the K-12 museum-school partnership programs. This position will also help develop and be responsible for sustaining ongoing relationships and strategic partnerships with university faculty for whom Museum initiatives and collections are a valuable teaching resource. A broad array of programs and services for families and youth are independently developed and implemented by the Assistant Director of Education, including art and music making sessions, festivals, and interpretive gallery resources (digital and analogue). The training and supervision of a small group of student educators who also serve as gallery teachers is a key responsibility of this position. The Assistant Director of Education works closely with curatorial, education, and communications staff to expand the museum's mandate for arts and humanities education, with particular attention to supporting California Proposition 28. The successful candidate for this position will demonstrate the visionary leadership required to achieve new levels of success in educational programming and outreach by serving as a spokesperson and advocate for educational programming at the Museum, communicating its vision to inspire enthusiastic participation in Fowler programs and define new audiences; inspiring and encouraging discussions about how to engage visitors and develop audiences; bringing the resources of the Museum to an increasingly broad audience, seeking innovative ways to attract and retain that audience, and keeping aware of best practices and new ideas and instructional means. Reporting to the Director of Education and Interpretation, weekly meetings are held at which time all job responsibilities will be presented by the Assistant Director of Education and plans for future programs will be discussed. . In addition, work is reviewed when actions represent a deviation from standard guidelines. The employee is expected to act with independence in determining daily duties and priorities to accomplish goals and resolve problems.
