**The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology** has an outstanding opportunity for a **Medical Laboratory Scientist Lead** in the Harborview Medical Center Microbiology Lab.
**WORK SCHEDULE**
+ 100% FTE (40 hours per week)
+ Day Shift **DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION** A regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for innovative patient care, research and educational programs, the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology combines the sophisticated testing and informatics capabilities of fully accredited laboratories with the resources of an academic institution in its delivery of clinical and anatomic pathology services. + Relocation incentive for eligible new employees **PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES**
+ Perform duties of Medical Laboratory Scientist 2 or Medical Laboratory Scientist 1.
+ Review the work of staff to ensure reports are correct and clinically relevant. Ensure corrected reports are issued ASAP and timely corrective actions are taken and documented. Consult with healthcare providers concerning critical or abnormal findings.
+ Utilize information management systems to accession, status, verify, and reject orders. Correctly input test results using the laboratory information system.
+ Assure that critical values, STAT results, courtesy notifications, and routine results are reported according to established protocols, ensuring turn-around-times are consistently within guidelines and documentation is complete.
+ Assure quality control standards and competencies are met and documented; assure preventative maintenance is performed according to established protocols assisting staff as needed. Troubleshoot methods and instrumentation.
+ Provide daily leadership. Oversee daily operations of staff to include: the management of workload, providing timely technical assistance to staff and clients, responding to inquiries and complaints, insuring safety compliance, minimizing overtime, etc.
+ Provide leadership in the instruction and training of employees, post-doctoral fellows, residents, medical students, medical laboratory scientist students, etc. Recognize ineffectiveness or deficiencies in performance and provides fair and timely feedback to the individual in order to improve performance.
+ Provide input on staff and student evaluations in a timely manner.
+ Assist in the development and evaluation of new processes and/ or procedures and participates in improving current processes.
+ Consult with Clinical Laboratory Supervisor, Heath Services Manager and Faculty Director in matters related to purchasing, budgeting and cost analysis. Inform faculty of unusual technical problems and help establish laboratory policies.
+ Coordinate efforts with Laboratory Safety Office in ensuring a safe working environment.
+ Assure accreditation preparation and ongoing accreditation readiness.
+ Provide administrative assistance to include: interviewing and selecting new employees, evaluating employees, documenting staff competencies, recommending cost containment strategies, etc.
+ Additional tasks that may be assigned include: scheduling, purchasing supplies, quality improvement projects, and others as needed.
+ Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care or other services based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patient.
+ Continuing education: keep ASCP or other certifications up to date per guidelines of national organization.
+ Performs related duties as required. **REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS**
+ Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience AND
+ Medical Laboratory Scientist certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent, or certification with a specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory divisionAND
