Loan Underwriter plays a crucial role in the loan origination and portfolio management process. Here are some of the key responsibilities associated with this position:
- Loan Approval and Verification:
- Assess Loan Applications: Loan underwriters evaluate loan applications based on the financial capacity and capability of the loan applicant.
- Verify Documents: They ensure that all necessary documents are accurate and complete before approving loans.
- Risk Assessment and Classification:
- Loan underwriters determine and classify potential financial risks and problems that could arise during the loan process.
- Analyzes required income documentation including personal or business tax returns, rental property analysis, K-1, etc.
- Lending Activities and Policy Implementation:
- Control Lending Activities: They implement lending activities for all loan programs.
- Collections Management: Loan underwriters implement collections activities and strategies, ensuring timely payments from borrowers.
- Policy Implementation: They ensure that company policies related to loans are effectively implemented.
- Reporting and Communication:
- Monthly Reports: Loan underwriters prepare monthly portfolio and financial reports for various stakeholders.
- Communication: They regularly communicate with credit administration, commercial business managers, and legal counsel to address due diligence issues.
Loan Underwriter evaluates risk acceptability, reviews applications, and ensures policies are issued accurately within company guidelines. They’re essential for maintaining underwriting quality and supporting Credit Union staff and members.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Implements and supervises daily operations of the underwriting process, including processing, credit analysis, and document preparation.
- Implements underwriting strategy and operational policies for product lines.
- Reviews and approves decisions related to loan applications and portfolio management.
- Aids in defining, establishing, and implementing procedures for risk criteria, application and renewal, and acceptance and rejection.
- Develops underwriting team expertise through coaching, support, and educational programs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Experience, Knowledge:
- Consumer credit underwriting or senior level processing required
- Consumer Home Equity processing required, underwriting preferred
- Residential First Mortgage experience preferred
- 1-3 years of experience in the related area as an individual contributor.
- 1-3 years of supervisory experience is preferred
- Associates degree or equivalent financial institution credit experience
Bachelor’s degree preferred
