General Description
The Legal Intern will be provided the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop experience in a variety of legal and compliance matters within the insurance industry. While the actual projects and cases will vary based on business needs and student interests, Legal Interns will conduct research, provide analysis, and support compliance issues during their program. Generally, the internship program will consist of 40 hours per week for 10-12 weeks during the summer semester. Limited Fall and Spring part-time internships may be available.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This position will perform a variety of work depending on the needs of the legal and compliance departments. These may include but are not limited to:
+ Assist departments and internal clients with legal related matters; this may include fact-finding, researching, and/or writing
+ Research legal issues and legislative histories, and summarize their findings
+ Research corporate structuring and provide summary of analysis or findings
+ Review, proofread, and edit documents, forms, and reports
+ Compile state summaries as required for various legal issues.
+ Interact with colleagues, including individual contributors, managers, and senior leaders to assist with investigations and obtain relevant information from internal and external sources
+ Assist with resolving disputes to include analysis of the facts, identification of applicable law, analysis of facts and law, and recommendations to the responsible attorney
+ Attend client meetings to learn about active cases or projects
+ Assist compliance with filings, research, and projects
+ Attend meetings, programs, and trainings to incorporate broad learning opportunities beyond the Legal and Compliance team
+ Perform administrative duties such as filing and/or organizing folders, binders, etc.
Education, Licensure, Certification, and Experience
+ Currently enrolled in first or second year of an ABA accredited law school
+ Experience sufficient to work effectively in a professional, office environment
+ Have completed at least one semester of legal research and writing coursework, earning a grade of B or better
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Strong written and verbal communication skills
+ Strong attention to detail, including editing skills
+ Sound judgment, including the ability to ask questions, seek input, and apply feedback/coaching productively
+ Effectively manage time and work schedule to complete projects in a timely manner, often handling multiple tasks at once.
+ Ability to understand and apply legal concepts and issues to business situations
+ Skilled in the use of Lexis-Nexis and other legal research programs
+ Ability to participate in company programs
+ Willing to learn contracts, business structures, and compliance matters
+ Willing to learn and gain knowledge of the insurance industry
