About the Job
The candidate will be part of a team that supports operations & maintenance of the District’s infrastructure, namely water control structures and pump stations. Responsibility includes delivering engineering services and decisions that contribute to the success of the District’s various strategic programs, and this position involves both office and field work. A successful candidate should be able to effectively communicate technical information with various levels of staff, including field staff, engineers, non-engineers, and management.
Seeking an Electrical, Structural, or Mechanical engineer. This position is an engineering role in the District’s Infrastructure Management Section, under the Engineering & Construction Bureau, and specific duties of the candidate will include:
- Supporting multi-disciplinary engineering inspections;
- Identifying and developing the scope and justification for capital projects;
- Managing one or more annual inspection programs;
- Providing engineering support in the field by identifying & troubleshooting issues, determining recommendations, developing the scope, and assisting in timely solutions; and
- Documenting issues and resolutions, and preparing occasional presentations.
The candidate may also be involved in technical review of capital project designs, with a focus on operability and ease of maintenance, to ensure that constructed projects will function as needed in a cost-effective manner.
Candidate should be proficient in using Microsoft Office. In addition to working in the office, the candidate will work in industrial settings and outdoors to support operations of District water control structures and pump stations across the District’s geographic area of responsibility.
Position may be filled as either Lead Engineer, Senior Engineer, Staff Engineer, Engineering Specialist 4, Engineering Specialist 3, Engineering Specialist 2, or Engineering Specialist 1.
This position’s salary will range from Mid: $90,000 – Max: $115,000 for Lead Engineer. If this position is filled at a lower level, the salary will be commensurate with that level.

Lead Engineer: Master’s Degree preferred. Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil/Structural or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program and 8+ years of engineering experience.
Senior Engineer: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Civil/Structural or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program and 6+ years of engineering experience.
Staff Engineer and Engineering Specialist 4: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Civil/Structural or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program and 4+ years of engineering experience.
Engineering Specialist 3: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Civil/Structural or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program and 2+ years of engineering experience.
Engineering Specialist 2: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Civil/Structural or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program and 1+ years of engineering experience.
Engineering Specialist 1: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Civil/Structural or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program and less than 1 year of engineering experience.
License for Lead Engineer, Senior Engineer and Staff Engineer:
Requires a valid State of Florida Professional Engineer (PE) License and keeps licensure status current OR ability to obtain Florida PE License within six months of employment by reciprocation of Professional Engineer License from another state.
License for Engineering Specialist 1 - 4:
Requires a valid Engineer-In-Training certification, and candidate must work towards and attain a State of Florida Professional Engineer (PE) License.
A valid Florida Driver's License is required.
Worksite:
West Palm Beach Administrative Headquarters (B1).
Physical Requirements/Working Environment:
Due to the District's response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role. Storm season typically is from June 1 through November 30.
