Lead Accountant
(Accounting & Payroll Specialist)
Our client is seeking a highly skilled Lead Accountant with exceptional bookkeeping expertise to join their team. In this pivotal role, you'll leverage your strong bookkeeping background to maintain meticulous financial records while also managing the weekly payroll processes, including union payroll. As a key player in the accounting/administrative department, you'll provide critical oversight to ensure financial accuracy and compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee all bookkeeping functions, ensuring accurate and timely recording of financial transactions
- Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger with precision
- Process weekly payroll for 50 employees, including calculating wages, benefits, and deductions
- Handle specialized union payroll processing, adhering to collective bargaining agreements
- Calculate and remit union dues, pension contributions, and other union-specific deductions
- Reconcile bank statements, credit card accounts, and payroll records
- Prepare and file payroll tax returns (940, 941, W-2s, 1099s)
- Supervise junior accountants and bookkeepers, providing guidance and training
- Conduct monthly, quarterly, and year-end closings
- Assist in preparing financial statements and reports for management
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, labor laws, and union regulations
- Collaborate with HR on payroll policy updates and employee inquiries
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field
- 5+ years of experience in accounting, with a strong focus on bookkeeping
- 3+ years of experience processing weekly payroll, particularly union payroll
- Proficiency in QuickBooks, ADP Workforce Now (or similar HRIS), and Microsoft Excel
- Knowledge of GAAP and payroll tax laws
- Understanding of union payroll requirements and collective bargaining agreements
- Attention to detail and high accuracy in data entry
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent time management and organizational abilities
- Effective communication skills to interface with employees and union representatives
Preferred:
- Experience in construction or industrial contracting
- Familiarity with state-specific labor laws
