The Canal & River Trust is among the UK’s largest charities, having been set up in 2012 to care for our historic canals and river navigations across England and Wales.
We are proud to be the guardian of over 2,000 miles of historic inland waterways which touch millions of people in the major cities, market towns and rural villages they run through. Our towpaths are free to use and provide a space to escape, relax, exercise, and improve your physical and mental health and wellbeing. The Trust’s income now exceeds £200m per annum, and is continuing to grow. Our boating customers desire excellent levels of service and the growing number of volunteers and community groups who help us care for the waterways also seek a rewarding experience.
The Trust is seeking to appoint a Regional Operations Manager for the East Midlands. The successful applicant will be confident in their ability to lead a large and diverse team including maintenance operatives, contractors, volunteers and local community groups; and have the impact and influence to build and manage relationships with colleagues, customers and other key stakeholders.
Location and coverage
Although working remotely from home there will be a requirement to travel across your area of responsibility and to our main hub spaces as and when required to meet with your team, colleagues and for collaborative meetings.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience
Reporting to the Regional Director, this is an exciting opportunity for a leader with a desire to make a difference in their local region and it's communities through their care for our fantastic industrial heritage. We anticipate that successful candidates will have a variety of previous operations experience in order to;
- Deliver outstanding visitor experiences that support the Trust’s vision of creating living waterways that transform places and enrich lives.
- Engage with, listen to and respond to our waterway users and visitors so that the services we provide are of the highest possible standard, whilst always seeking continuous improvement.
- Lead, motivate and develop the region’s operational team, contractors and volunteers to deliver our regional plan providing maximum benefit for users and visitors.
About your knowledge skills & experience
- Experience of effective and efficient delivery processes, cost control, performance measures and reporting.
- Leadership through transformational change.
- Operational management in a visitor / infrastructure network environment that delivers an excellent customer service or visitor experience.
- Excellent interpersonal, leadership and communication skills.
- Experience of visitor focussed work which demonstrates the ability to think strategically whilst also delivering technical challenges.
- Successful leadership of large teams including people management, that has created and motivated high performing and diverse teams.
- Experience improving and maintaining motivation and engagement within teams and of demonstrating a strong people focus.
- Strong financial management and resource planning experience.
- Experience of safety management
- Experience working with and developing volunteers to deliver regional programmes.
- Contract management.
- Full and valid UK driving licence.
