Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental Director – LEGOLAND California Resort
Position Overview:
Are you passionate about creating safe, secure, and sustainable environments? As the Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) Director at LEGOLAND California Resort, you will take the lead in shaping and implementing an industry-leading HSSE program. You'll be a key member of the resort's leadership team, driving the highest standards in health, safety, security, and environmental management, all while ensuring compliance with local regulations and Merlin Entertainments’ policies.
In this role, you'll not only oversee the HSSE function but also actively contribute to the success of the resort's overall operations. Key Objectives:
- Develop and maintain HSSE policies, systems, and procedures, ensuring effective management of health, safety, security, environmental, and sustainability practices for both current operations and future expansions.
- Maintain a strong focus on safety standards and operational protocols for the resort’s technical services, rides, food and beverage, hotel, and aquarium/diving operations.
- Create realistic, cost-benefit-driven short- and long-term HSSE plans, prioritizing risk control and performance benchmarks.
- Lead innovative HSSE initiatives that foster a culture of continuous improvement and top-tier performance.
- Implement rigorous audit and inspection programs to uphold HSSE standards and ensure compliance with industry regulations.
- Establish effective procedures for reporting and analyzing incidents, near misses, and work-related illnesses to drive safety improvements.
- Deliver comprehensive HSSE performance reports, offering clear insights and actionable analysis for continuous enhancement.
Main Responsibilities:
Business Impact/Results:
- Spearhead the HSSE strategy, ensuring continuous improvement and integration into the resort’s broader objectives.
- Provide strategic guidance to senior management, empowering them to take ownership of their HSSE responsibilities and improvements.
- Evaluate risks across all operations, implementing stringent controls and conducting thorough compliance audits.
- Collaborate with the leadership team to reduce accidents, enhance safety, and drive overall safety performance.
- Maintain an effective risk assessment strategy through audits, ensuring all risks are identified and mitigated.
- Draft and develop new HSSE standards and procedures, ensuring alignment with evolving business needs.
- Conduct cost-benefit and gap analyses as part of the development process for new HSSE standards.
- Stay ahead of industry changes, ensuring new HSSE legislation and standards are integrated seamlessly.
- Ensure comprehensive management of core risks, including ride, fire, and food safety, in collaboration with other leaders.
- Lead cultural change initiatives, such as the "Protecting the Magic" campaign, to align with Merlin Entertainments Group’s HSSE vision.
- Provide insightful management information on HSSE achievements, tracking progress against key performance indicators.
- Represent HSSE in senior leadership meetings, offering strategic perspectives on performance and emerging issues.
- Support group-wide HSSE initiatives, contributing to the overall success of Merlin Entertainments’ global safety standards.
Creativity & Communication:
- Collaborate with department heads to identify and address safety training needs, ensuring programs are tailored to meet business requirements.
- Liaise with enforcement bodies to ensure compliance with safety standards for new projects and attractions, from design to operations.
- Act as the main point of contact for external agencies, overseeing follow-ups on incidents, compliance issues, and complaints.
- Develop and deliver tailored HSSE training programs, with a focus on "Train the Trainer" systems to enhance internal capabilities.
- Engage with third-party training bodies to ensure HSSE training is up-to-date and accredited.
- Establish and oversee competency and training requirements across all resort operations, ensuring consistent HSSE knowledge and skills.
- Provide detailed management information regarding training requirements, completions, and areas for improvement.
Decision Making & Autonomy:
- Implement cost-effective accident prevention strategies, minimizing direct and indirect costs from incidents involving guests, employees, and contractors.
- Interpret HSSE laws and standards, applying them pragmatically to LEGOLAND California’s operations.
- Create specific HSSE management programs for high-risk areas, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements and best practices.
Applied Knowledge & Specialist Skills:
- Develop risk control systems and advise management on legal and technical standards for hardware and human performance.
- Serve as the local expert on HSSE IT systems, including Lenel, Avigilon, and MIDAS.
Managing Resources:
- Manage HSSE programs within budget constraints, ensuring efficient resource allocation.
- Ensure HSSE representatives are appointed, trained, and coordinated effectively. Lead committee meetings and participate in employee forums where necessary.
Qualifications & Experience:
Background and Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in Health and Safety management, with a proven track record in implementing and leading safety programs.
- Industry-specific experience within theme parks, entertainment, or leisure environments is highly desirable. Alternatively, candidates with relevant experience in medium to high-risk industries will be considered.
Education:
- A bachelor’s degree in Safety, Health, or a related field is required.
- Advanced safety certifications, such as ASP (Associate Safety Professional) or CSP (Certified Safety Professional), are preferred.
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to sit for extended periods during on-site/off-site meetings, travel, and administrative tasks.
- Requires intermittent walking and standing throughout the park for site inspections and staff interactions.
- Ability to climb stairs and navigate varying terrains within the park.
- Fine motor skills are required for paperwork and computer-based tasks.
- Must have the visual and auditory capacity to read, perform administrative tasks, communicate effectively, and operate vehicles.
Work Environment:
- Exposure to a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, with varying temperatures and walking surfaces.
Other Job Requirements:
- Must be flexible with working hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate resort operations.
- A valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and the willingness to use a personal vehicle for work-related purposes are required.
- Must possess or be able to acquire a valid passport and travel visas as needed.
- Regular attendance is essential for fulfilling the responsibilities of this role.
- Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.
