Position Overview:
The Kitchen Manager is responsible for supporting the daily operations of the kitchen in an assisted living community. This role works alongside the Director of Food Service to ensure the preparation and delivery of nutritious and appetizing meals to residents, while maintaining high standards of food safety, sanitation, and service. The Kitchen Manager will also assist with menu planning, inventory management, staff supervision, and maintaining a positive dining experience for residents.
Key Responsibilities:
- Meal Preparation & Service:
- Assist in the preparation, cooking, and presentation of meals according to established menus, dietary requirements, and resident preferences.
- Ensure meals are served on time and in a manner that meets the community’s high standards for quality and appearance.
- Monitor food temperatures and portion sizes to meet safety and nutritional guidelines.
- Staff Supervision & Training:
- Supervise kitchen staff during meal preparation, ensuring all team members follow appropriate protocols and work efficiently.
- Assist in training and mentoring kitchen staff in food preparation, safety procedures, and customer service.
- Ensure kitchen staff maintains cleanliness and organization during food preparation and cleanup.
- Inventory & Ordering:
- Help manage kitchen inventory, including ordering and storing supplies, monitoring stock levels, and ensuring proper rotation of products.
- Track and report inventory needs to the Director of food Service to ensure the kitchen is always well-stocked with necessary ingredients.
- Food Safety & Sanitation:
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal food safety regulations and guidelines, including proper food handling, storage, and sanitation practices.
- Oversee cleanliness of the kitchen and dining areas, ensuring equipment is cleaned and maintained according to safety standards.
- Menu Planning & Dietary Needs:
- Collaborate with the Director of Food Service and dietitians to plan and prepare meals that meet the dietary needs and preferences of residents, including special diets (e.g., low-sodium, low-sugar, gluten-free, etc.).
- Assist in evaluating resident satisfaction with meals and adjusting menus as necessary to accommodate preferences and needs.
- Communication & Collaboration:
- Maintain clear communication with the Department Director, dining room staff, and other departments to ensure a smooth flow of meals and services.
- Work with residents and families to address dietary preferences, restrictions, or concerns.
- Additional Responsibilities:
- Assist with the maintenance and proper functioning of kitchen equipment.
- Support their manager in other administrative tasks as needed, including budgeting, staff scheduling, and reporting.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Servsaf certified- Required.
- Experience:
- At least 2 years of experience in a kitchen or food service environment, preferably in a healthcare or assisted living setting.
- Supervisory or leadership experience is preferred.
- Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of food safety, sanitation practices, and dietary needs for elderly populations.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to multitask effectively.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle changing priorities.
- Compassionate and patient attitude toward residents and staff.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 25 pounds, and perform physically demanding tasks such as bending, lifting, and walking.
Must be able to work in a hot, noisy kitchen environment.
